Snow Chains and Off Road...

Recommended Posts

I know this sounds really dumb, but I wanted to check before I tried.

Do snow chains work well going off road in the snow?

It sounds like a good idea... but the whole issue of the mud under the snow brings concern... Do you really want to dig under the snow (as the chains would) or do you want to flow above? On pavement, good idea to dig into the snow because pavement is better. But I wouldn't think mud is better than snow...

Just wanted a second opinion. I haven't seen many pictures of trucks with chains on going off roading. Maybe they know something I don't...

Thanks.

Chains = traction, there's no other way to put it. When you're driving in snow and you spin tires w/o chains you instantly turn it to ice or at the very least packed snow. Chains will bite into whatever you're driving on for traction vs. plain rubber tires spinning and going nowhere. Mud underneath makes no difference.

You don't use chains to dig to the pavement, they are just "claws" to bite into the snow to improve traction. Running chains on pavement will actually give you less traction because they can't bite into the asphalt so your just bouncing your tires as the chains come in contact with the ground.
