ProComp Tires

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have an opinion on the new ProComp Xtreme all terrains or ProComp tires in general?

I'm thinking of getting some 305/65R17 Xtreme all terrains after Christmas.  My other choice is the Goodyear MTRs.

Waaaay back in 2003, there were several notes about the ProComp and one of the posters praised the tires heavily because he had to guard against thorn protection in the desert. Sidewall punctures were a real problem for him until he purchased the ProComps. You might do a search here for the message exchanges back then.

In the meantime, at the TireRack website, is this survey chart in which the Goodyears and other tires are rated. Taken as only a guide, this might help:

Thanks Larry. I loooked on Tirerack.com for ProComps but, I guess they don't carry them. I'll keep looking for some kind of opinions on them and if I don't get too much feedback, I'll go with the MTRs.

The MTRs aren't the #1 pick in thier catagory like they were when I got them for my GMC but, they have many more miles reported than any of the other tires they are compared to. I liked them a lot when I had them before so I won't hesitate to get them again if the ProComps don't work out.

Thanks for your response.

I think much depends on your kind of driving. If you are concerned about sidewall punctures (thorns, pasture roads, etc.), then I think the ProComp would be the way to go, otherwise go that which you feel comfortable with. Not sure why TireRack doesn't sell ProComp, but they didn't sell them a few years back, either.

I got 60K miles out of my first set of PC Mud terrain tires (33x12.50R15), sold them to a friend for $200 about 2 years ago, he is still running them. Never had a problem. My current PC X-terrains have about 35K miles on them and are wearing just as good as the MT's. There are hundreds of internet sites that sell PC's. www.ntwonline is one site that I bought the Mud terrain tires from. I bought the X-terrains from the local performance shop. I would hesistate to buy another PC tire. Only reason my next truck won't have PC tires is that I'm wanting 20x10 WELD Racing rims with 33 MT's, not a common tire, so my choices are limited. Chris

how are the pc mud terrain and pc x terrain in light snow \ icy road conditions.

the mud terrain has a lot more sipes than any other m\t tire than i have seen, so it in theory it should be the best. but still not great. anyone have exp with these kinds of winter conditions? ( live in manitoba, Canada )

It doesn't snow alot here in Central Kentucky, but we've had some pretty good ice storms over the last couple years. As far as ice, forget, no tire unless it has chains or studs will go very far. But driving when it was a mix of snow, freezing rain I had no trouble in either tire, the X-terrains have about as much sipping as the MT's had. The most snow I drove in was with the X-terrains it was about 5", no trouble stopping or starting. I just saw where the X-terrains are coming out in a 33" for 20" rims, so I will give them a serious look, but at almost $400 a tire, might be too expensive. Chris

I have ProComp All Terrains on my Suburban 265/75-16 Load Range E on 16x8 rims. I bought these last year because I do mostly hiway driving, but needed something also good in soft sand when I take the RV out on the beach. I had Michelin LTX/MS and weren't happy with them. They sucked off road and had *zero* wet grip. The PCs are better all around...not only great offroad, but they are excellent on wet rainy roads and also in snow. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another pair. I was surprised how much traction these have on wet pavement. ABS almost never kicks in now.

I was skepical at first because TireRack doesn't carry them, but local truck shop recommened them so gave them a try. A little pricey at $169, but they had a sale of buy 3 get 1 free, so $507/set wasn't bad. Have about 20K miles on them, and they look like I'll get close to the 50K that ProComp promises. Towing does wear them out faster too.
