locking rear

Recommended Posts

Hope someone can help me with this. Just purchased my 3rd full size GM truck a 2002 GMC 4x4 extra cab Its the 5.3 with 3.73 rear. My last truck a 1996 chevy z71 extracab had the g80 locking rear and this truck does not. I didn't think I would miss the rear but i do. Truck spins the wheels every time i try and move in the rain. Can someone recommend an after market locking rear.

There will be lots of opinions here on this, but my recommendation is to go with the Eaton G80 which is typically what GM installs. The main reason is that there are zillions of them out there, and the local dealer will be familiar:

http://www.traction.eaton.com/prod2.htm

Their website has this question: "What about a boat ramp? Ever been in a situation where one side of the ramp is all wet and slippery while the other side is dry as a bone? With an open differential, all you'll do is spin the wheels. And, even 4-wheel drive doesn't do much good in that situation."

Their website also has some vid-clips.

Now, there are many lockers out there of different brands, but unless your rig lives in the mud pits, or you go rock crawling, or are pulling a trailer home through flood terraces, I'd go with the Eaton and again, the dealer knows the Eaton very well.
