2500HD 6" lift questions

Recommended Posts

I have a 2001 GMC 2500HD, i want to get a 6" lift...i have a couple questions hopefully someone could answer.

I would like to save some money and install it myself, how hard is it? I know you need some special tools like a torsion bar unloader or something, but what else? I I have installed only straight axle lifts, so I know the rear is cake. I would have access to my shop for 2 days to install it on my days off. How much cutting, welding, ect is involved? I have a good amount of tools, so that isnt a problem.

Any kits that are better than the others in your opinion?

Thanks.

I installed the Pro-Comp kit on my truck with the help of a buddy. It took a good long while to do it though. Probably about 3 weeknights and 12 hours on Saturday. You can prob get it done in two long days. The ProComp kit isn't the easiest one to put on, but I chose it because I liked the way it achieves it's drop. There's a good bit of cutting with the kit. You have to trim the upper control arm mounts so the new drop brackets fit on good. There is about 8" of welding needed when you cut off the front diff mounting bracket. Its not bad at all, but you need a welder to do it. Overall, it was pretty difficult, but I enjoyed it. Ohh yeah, you'll need about 10 sawzall blades too. I went through 9.

Let me know if you have more questions.

I, too, put on the ProComp lift with the upper control arm drop. Freyguy is exactly right there is alot of cutting. It is moderately difficult, but very time consuming. I did mine by myself in my driveway in 6 days (nights on workdays and all day Sat and Sun.) The spindle lift kits are alot easier to put on...the upper control arm does not have to be relocated, but you do have to cut the upper mounting flange off of the differential (in most cases). This lift will limit wheel choice though. I could not do a spindle lift because they only allow a 4-5/8" backspacing on rim. The rims I bought were 17x10 with 5" backspacing. Anyway...best of luck!

I am thinking about buying the procomp also from summit racing p/n# exp-k1051b. Someone up here has it for sale who is going through some tough times and the kit is still boxed up. Will I still be able run 16" wheels becuase I already have some 16x8 moto metals with 4" back spacing? I also noticed on procomps seb site that I might need a new front driveshaft if I run in 4x4 over 25mph, why is this? My truck is a 05 2500hd cc gasser.

yes you can run the 16" wheels with 4" BS. The driveshaft is for trucks with the Auto 4x4. If you have it, you will need the driveshaft. At least that is my understanding. Mine does not have the Auto4x4.

Do you mean autotrack or the 4x4push button? I don't have the manual transfer case floor shifter. I am guessing the factory 16" wheels will not fit due to the back spacing.

if you have autotrack, the round button above the 2,4hi,4lo square buttons, then you will need the front driveshaft.

the factory wheels will still work. that is the beauty of the procomp lift, from a wheel perspective the setup is nearly identical to stock. what limits the wheel options is having the extended spindle on the spindle lift kits like Fabtech.

Thats what I wanted to hear. I didn't think autotrack was available on the 2500hd just on the 1500.

Autotrac is only available on trucks 8600GVW and less. Autotrac uses the NVG 246 T-case and Hds use the NVG 261 manual shift or NVG 263 Push button shift.
