Lift and Gears ?'s

Recommended Posts

I have got an '01 Z ext. cab and i am going to lift my truck in about a month or so, with a 6" Fabtech lift with 315's terra Grappler's on 16x9 helo guns. 1) I was wondering what would be the difference in gas mileage, cause I know there will be. I get about 13.5 in the city and about 16.5 highway. 2) I was also wondering if I were to install new gears would that help with gas mileage? Or would a chip be better b/c of price? 3) Also is there a way to get the speedometer back to the right speed after the install of the lift?

Thanks.

gas milage will drop with the larger tires. if you want it to stay reasonanly close you need to change the gears. the average rule of thumb is: 4.10's with 33" tires and 4.56's with 35" tires.

the chip wouldn't help any with mileage, at least not in a good way. it will make more power but it will just burn more fuel.

the speedometer can be fixed. i think yours is electronically controlled and you will need some type of electronic device to adjsut it. whoever you buy the lift and tires of should be able to better help you with this issue.

Yes, you'll need new gears. They'll help a little with gas.

Yes, you'll probably need a tune (chip) to recalibrate the 'puter for the tire size.

Yes, the chip will make your fuel mileage better.

You can spend the same amount on gears and a tune as you spent on the lift, and if you're lucky...Only drop a mpg or two.

the 4wd shop that did mine, only uses precision gears and bearings. you might want to look up Randy's ring and pinion on the net. they had some of the better prices when i was shoping for parts. but that was a while ago. definitly do some research. 4wd magazines tend to have a lot of advertisers in them, it would be a good place to start.

you can change gears if you want to, but you definately don't have to. i lifted my '01 z-71 and the gearing is just fine. i am running 33's on 17x9 and my

speedometer did not change at all. i drive by these radar boxes our town puts

out on the side of the road to show you how fast you are going, and mine

is always right on. all i am saying is that you can get the lift/new wheels/tires,

and you will be set to go. gears/brakes/ everyting that you already have will

be good to go. any changes you make are optional.
