I had a bad day!

Recommended Posts

Okay, I have been fighting this thumping noise from the front of my truck for a couple weeks. Well, I decide to get it fixed before I pull the camper this holiday weekend on $3.20/gal gas. I went in to my favorite tire shop and had all the wheels balanced, figuring that would take care of it. Nope. Now I was certain one or two tires were bad, broken or shifted belt, you know. When the tire tech. re-installs my drivers front tire he notices that the hub seems loose. Yep, sure enough, wheel bearing was bad. Well, I call my Chevy dealer because I don't trust a tire shop to do anything but put tires on and I can get it in and have it done today. So, I ask, "Can I have my old tires put back on since I now know what the trouble was?" They say, "No, we already mounted the new tires." So, I drive up to the dealer and they get it in and tear into it. I get a phone call while the courtesy driver is taking me home, "It seems that BOTH of the front bearings will need to be replaced." Great, I say, "Go ahead." I go later to pick up my truck and YIKES! The bill is very expensive. So. $611 for new tires that I didn't really need and $1004.06 for the new hub/bearings and I'm good to go. $755 for parts alone. Geez, are they made of titanium?

BTW, today is my 9th wedding anniversary. I can't win for losing! LOL! I gotta go now and get my anniversary present! WOOHOO!

The last time I replaced the hubs and bearings on a truck, the total cost for both sides was closer to $175 for parts.

Bad day indeed.

Happy (belated) anniversery, BTW :driving:

The bearings are sealed and pressed into the hub and only replaceable as a whole unit. I looked up the part number on gmpartsdirect.com and they run $230.49 with shipping. At napaonline.com the part is $320.49 and at my local NAPA store they are $306.79. Yeah I suppose I could have saved some money and did it myself without the correct tools, but my time is too valuable to mess around with this myself.

Yeah, I guess it wasn't that bad. I know there are cheaper placed in town for repair work, but the dealer had the parts on hand and knew exactly how to do the job. AND, they got it done in less than 2 hours! Good customer service.

Everytime I think about how much it cost me, I just imagine how bad it could have been with the whole family in the truck pulling my 11000# camper and having a wheel fall off the truck. Not pretty.
