87 Octane ?

Is it OK to run 87 octane even though the owners manual says 89 for an 05 2500 HD 6.0 ?

what !? thats news to me, i thought all these things were 87, but if hte manual says run 89 then id run 89, they might have tweaked the timing etc

I second the What?*@!?

My 05 2500HD has never seen 89 octane. At about 11K miles now, still seems ok.

87 octane seems to get the job done just fine.

OK my bad, the manual says for 6.0L engines use "91 or higher for best performance" It also says "you may use middle grade or regular unleaded gasoline rated at 87 octane or higher, but your vehicle's acceleration may be slightly reduced"

The heck with all of that. With prices what they are I'm going to start using 87 and deal with it.

A lot of people say that with 87 their truck will ping, but i have yet to here it happen, even with my truck camper loaded in or my father's 29' trailer. Hills or no hills...

In my 01 I use to run 89 octance cause it was a little cheaper. The thing pinged some if I had to go up a hill or something like that where the motor had to work. I switched to 87 and the pinging reduced alot and I got about a .5 to 1 full mpg better. Maybe it is cause out 89 is mixed with 10% ethonal.

I have run 87 in my truck since I bought it new and no problems. I will run a tank of 89 or 93 through it occasionally since the higher octanes do normally have more cleaning agents in it (a family mechanic recommended this). It will be a while before it gets anything other than 87 since the price has gone up .

I run 87 unless hauling a heavy load. The truck seems to have more power and doesn't ping with 89. I was running 89 all the time until gas prices went up.
