Anything out there to increase gas mileage

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm looking to buy an 03' 2500 8.1L - just doing some homework before I get it. Is there anything out there that can improve gas mileage for them?? I posted another topic before and noone replied, if anyone could tell me any advice getting one or problems they had or any aftermarket items you put on that really work I would greatly appreciate it!!!!!! :driving:

Hmm, haven't tried to shut off the engine yet. But I did hook up a harpoon to the front of the truck that will shoot out and latch onto a tractor trailer and let them pull me!!!!

Also works well for those Hemi dodges, let those gas hogs pull me,

haha

What are you looking at body wise? i.e.-Long Bed vs. Short Bed, Cab size etc. I have an '01 Crew Cab Short Box 4x4 w/ 4.10 gears and the best I've seen so far is 13.2mpg. I know the different body's and (of course) gears make a BIG difference. And by big I mean 2 or 3 mpg.

Mine is getting better daily with the new tuned (Westers) PCM.

O also if you know alot about fuel and intake systems then get a Granatelli/DiabloSport Predator Tuners you can cut fuel trim back on it helping to save fuel, but will lose some power. note if you dont know any thing about fuel and indution systems i would not try to manualy program it. i have been tring to write a program that would work.

I have the identical truck to Polak. The best I have seen so far is 10 but I have 35's on it so my speedo and odo and just about everything else is screwed up bad right now. I just ordered the westers so hopefully that will help.

I'm debating on messing with the rear end gear, but not sure yet. The next thing will probably be an intake.

I agree with the last post. If gas mileage matters to you get something else.

2004 GMC 4x4 Regular Cab. 8.1 / Allison - Avg. per tank = 10 mpg (not towing / unloaded) Towing the boat, count 'em on hand.

True, but even 1 more MPG at $3 a gallon means something. Now if you do the math and see when the cost of upgrades evens out the $ of the fuel and you actually start SAVING money, you'll probably be in your third new truck :driving:

Oh, and BTW when I'm towing my Cruiser I can count the MPG's on my left hand, which I lost two fingers on in a tragic butter churning accident :P

I want basically the same truck as you, smae color and everything. I was just wondering if anything was out there- Obviously I know the gas mileage is very "little but I'm still going to get it, you can't beat these trucks.

i got 14.5 on a road trip last week stictly freeway and thats according to the dic, i actually trust that thing though, it said i used 22.3 gallons and i filled up with 22.28, you can improved mileage defenitely by exhaust and intake, jus tmake sure the exhaust isnt too big, and also changing the differential oil, and engine oil, and of course airfilter on the stock box, but its an 8.1, i just drive it and put gas in it and try not to look at the prices too closely

Breathing mods, unstuffing the engine.

Good tune, Aftermarket or home made air intake, and good maintance. good breathing mods, which is makes a little louder when getting on her.

maybe some taller tires.

Best and only repeated couple of times : 16.5mpg

Have Hptuners now, Whatever my heart desires or what the motor wants.

Heck even turbos give some mpg back, just cruising. Due the engine not working to suck air in.

MY Vote is for the turbo.

Put Westers and Volant on my 04/CC/SB/8.1/Allison. Was getting 8.5-9 city before all those mods. Now getting solid 10.5 city and best of 14.9 Highway. I certainly don't drive it like I stole it, but I'm not ****-footing around either.

I went with the Big Block because a buddy had 6.0 and was getting 11 MPG city OR highway. He's really mad at me because my much larger engine is getting about same MPG as his
