DIC Oil changes

Recommended Posts

How does the DIC come up with the time to change the oil.  Does it go by mileage or elapsed time or what ?

I do not know if the simulation formula is public. It is definitely more complex than just mileage. I suspect the algorithm is probably complex enough that it is covered by one or more patents.

GM says:

Researchers learned that oil degrades in a predictable fashion and that monitoring a few engine-operating conditions allows oil life to be determined quite accurately. Specifically, the engine computer monitors engine speed to count combustion events while also estimating oil temperature based other engine operating conditions. From here, the computer is able to determine the rate of oil deterioration and notifies when to change oil. This software based GM Oil Life System is part of the same computer that also helps to control engine functions and is now available on most GM vehicles. With this system, the guesswork of knowing when to change oil is removed

I have the DIC w/steering wheel controls in my truck, so all that's needed is to use the controls to scroll to the OLS display, then use another of the buttons to reset it. For vehicles without the steering wheel controls it varies, but usually involves turning the key to accessory and pressing the gas pedal xx times, or something like that. Check your owners' manual for the right way to do it- it's in there for sure.
