Hear gas gauge prob is fairly common

Recommended Posts

I just bought a 01 Silverado 2500hd and the gas gauge shows empty from full down to about 3/4 of a tank. Then it starts to work, lots of times when you hit a bump and then it stays on for 29 - 30 seconds and goes back to empty. Is the fix typically the tank unit?

thanx

My '01 has the same problem and based on the treads here, I've pretty sure the sending unit is at fault. I was under the impression the sending unit and the fuel pump were all clustered together and not available independently? The DIY fix would be about $500. I've been living with it.........Z

I had the same problem on a 2001 Dmax. It was fixed under warranty. If the truck was out of warranty, I would go to the dealer, tell the service manager that I know that GM has had a problem with this sending unit. I'll recall that the fuel gage was pretty dependable in my 1969 GM vehicles and I thought the tecnology would have improved since then. Its their problem. I leave the vehicle, later they call me and tell me that it has been repaired and that GM has authorized them to fix it as a one time "good will gesture". I've had over $2000 in good will gestures.

I'll check back later to see if GM removes my post
