Dropping the spare

I'm wondering if anyone has dropped the spare on a newer ('03 for example) 2500HD. The owner's manual says there is some kind of latch holding it up there. You need to take the jack and push up on the center to release it. There is a long, drawn out procedure in the owner's manual. I think they even say you need to take it back to the dealer to get it reinstalled.

 

I'm wondering if I should drop the spare now and see how hard it really is. Or should I wait until I really need it only to find it's rusted on there for good?

 

Why is this latch there anyway? Is it supposed to keep the tire there if the cable breaks or something?

 

I have my spare locked onto the frame with a cable and padlock anyway.
