Bigger tires

Recommended Posts

I'm fighting the urge to replace the old man cracker wheels and tires on my 1500HD with something larger. I'd like to put 20s on it with some 285s but I'm concerned about extra strain on the transmission and the dealer not honoring my warranty if something goes awry. Thoughts?

Jumping up that little bit in size wont hurt your tranny but if you have a driveline related problem the dealer wont do nothing to it with the bigger tires installed, just save your old rims and tires and if you have a problem just put the orignal tires and rims back on and take it to the dealer.

Not entirely true:

My 4l80 tranny was one of the one's that mysteriously lost lubrication and burned the planetary gear along with clutches. Granted, I only went up 1 size on my tires, from 245's to 265's, but the truck is also running green keys and Eagle Alloy wheels along with a few other things. They set me up with a new transmission no questions asked. I also had pretty good warranty expeiences with my old ZR2 after it was lifted and on 33's.

This really all just depends on the dealership and the service writers/manager. Go talk to them and float the idea. If they don't like it, go down the road to the next dealership.

Thanks for the replies. The Ally in my old truck (still pictured in my sig) was having some issues at 65K. I took it to multiple dealers all of which refused to honor my GMPP extended warranty because I had it lowered and 305/45/22s on it. Because of this and the 8.1s ability to go about 2 miles between gas fill ups, I ended up just trading it in at another dealer for my 1500HD/6.0. It seems to get substantially better gas mileage.

I'll probably just deal with keeping the stock ones and throw em on if I have any sort of issues, but wanted to take a pulse and see who had what experiences along these lines. Keep em coming.
