Smoke at WOT

Recommended Posts

I'm fairly new to diesels and have a question I hope all you diesel-heads can answer for me. :jester:

My truck is new (05 Dmax/Ally CC) and only has about 1600 miles on it. Now I know that sometimes diesels can smoke, but I was wondering if the following was normal. The other day I "got on it" for the first time really. I was pulling out of a fast food parking lot and trying to merge with traffic, so I nailed it (WOT) to get in front of traffic. Well, it took off like a lightning bolt, but when I glanced in my rearview mirror I noticed that I'd left a puff of smoke in my wake back in the distance. I tested it again later and it did the same thing.

It hasn't smoked any other time, so I was wondering if was normal to get these puffs of smoke when you floor it. (BTW, it didn't smoke the whole time I had it floored, only when I first nailed it, literally left a small cloud of smoke back where I was when I hit it!).

Would appreciate any input. Thanks!

Normal for a diesel. If it continues to smoke after acceleration then you may have a concern (when it is new). If you follow a DMax on the highway and it merges or makes a pass you will always see that initial "puff".

Thanks sstimothy... appreciate the help. I just feel kinda bad for the poor sap in that Honda Accord (or whatever it was) that had to drive thru my "cloud" after I nailed it! Oh well... diesel smoke is good for you, right? :jester:
