Problem with my Sierra 2500, any ideas?

Recommended Posts

Hello, this is my first time here and I was hoping someone can help out. I have a '97 GMC Sierra 2500 4x4 with the 7.4 liter engine. For no reason one day it started to stall when I hit the gas. It would start again and idle fine, but as soon as you hit the throttle, it would die. I limped it home at 15 mph and changed the fuel filter. I thought it was fine, but it started doing the same thing again. Now it won't start at all. I scanned the computer and there aren't any codes. Could the fuel filter have gotten clogged again after only driving a few miles? Has anyone else had this problem?

My dad had an older Chevy Caprice that must have gotten some bad gas or someone put something in his tank...

The car would run for awhile and then die... it would fire back up after sitting a bit. Sometimes it would run for a few days...

The culprit was obviously a plugged fuel filter. (Which we carried several spares at the time, and would change them on the go).

Your problem could be the same thing, or possibly your fuel pump is going bad, or a bad fuel pressure regulator, or a number of other things...

I had a very simular problem with my 7.4 but i had hesitation at take off and at city speeds barly pressing the gas, carried it to the dealer and the number 2 and 6 injector were spraying to much fuel and you could easly tell at the bottom of the intake, well they didnt know what to do so they call gm tech and they said only 2 problems they have encountered was installation of a K&N filter and a bad pressure regulator so we swapped injectors from side to side and replaced the regulator and so far its funning fine and starts with on about 3 turns of the motor but still i can hince some hesitation on take off and at city driving speeds,,I hope this helps.
