Battery for HD 8.1

Recommended Posts

I have a 2001 HD. Even thought the truck has only

12,600 miles on it it is 4 years old. That's about the

lifetime of a factory battery. When I change I want to

get the best.

Tell me which battery you think is best and why.

Thanks guys

Bud

I just replaced my batteries in my 02 2500HD, one of my batteries started leaking. I honestly could care less about my batteries, as long as it starts....that's as much as i think about. I went to advanced autoparts and got 2 of their brand x titanium batteries....I think they have 770 cold cranking amps???

I know optimum?? Optima?? batteries are good? I don't know the real difference between them and a cheap battery? Maybe someone can chime in.

That is what I have always done, Advance, Autozone,

I just wanted to see if there was a difference!

I know one thing for sure, don't buy those batteries from checkers, autozone or anywhere else for that matter. You are fighting a losing battle. I work for checkers and the ratio of those batteries coming back compared to working for a good few years is slim. In my opinion exide are the worst batteries ever, nothing but junk. Waste of money....Mike

Optima is a well known brand. That's what will be my factory replacement when it gets to be that time. Plenty of cold CCA's and you can get a deep cycle if you need. The Yellowtops (dual purpose deep cycle for heavy accessory use) get about 870CA at 32 degrees and the Redtops get 1000 amps at 32 degrees depending on the model. Is 1000 amps enough for you?! :driving:

They are a little more expensive of course but if it's important to you it may be worth a look.

I don't know if they will fit in the factory mount, it may take adjustment as they are a slightly different shape/size. Check out their website www.optimabatteries.com

I have been using the Duralast Autozone brand battery for years. My experience is that they are hard to beat, especially considering the price. I always by the gold (or whatever the top series is), and it hasa 3 year free replacement, 8 year prorated warranty. Pretty hard to beat. The best part is, in the 4 cars that I have replaced batteries in, I have never had one of these Duralast go bad on me. Two of those vehicles I kept 6 years.

I bought a redtop to replace my factory battery at 4 years and 55K miles.

I bought it at O'Reilly's and got it for ~$120

It was a tight squeeze, but it did fit in the factory mount. I did alter the hold-down tab to better fit the cylinder style of the Redtop as opposed to a flat side.

I recently bought 2 Optima Yellows for my '01 truck. Fit was perfect and no problems with them.
