2500HD Tranny Whine in 1st

Recommended Posts

Hi to you all.

I have been lurking around here for a couple of years but this will be my first post.

I am looking at a 2002 Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab with the 6.0 and auto tranny to replace my 2001 Silverado Extended Cab 1500 5.3 for better towing capacity. The engine and transmission are new as the previous owner had them replaced under warranty at about 35500 miles. The pickup has 36500 on it now and when you take off there is a very noticeable "whine" in first with moderate to strong acceleration but when it shifts to second (or other gears) the whine goes away. It will also have a very slight whine while sitting in gear at a stop.

Is this a common problem or do you think there might be something wrong with the transmission?

I will be going back in to discuss prices etc with the dealership and would like to have a few of your opinions before I head in there on Monday.

Thanks for your help.

Michael

MDenny

Not sure if its normal but my 04 does the same thing, 1st gear only.

I have about 13 K on mine and have not brought it in yet about this.

Figure if its not normal it will self destruct before the warranty expires

Let me know what your dealer says about it !

I took my '04 in for the same issue (more noticeable when you go through a drive through). The did not do anything other than note it on my service record and sent me on my way. They grabbed a 2005 with the 6.0 and 4l80e and it did the same thing so they said it sounds normal. If they find anything or do anything please let us know.

Thanks

I have the 2003 6.0 It has the whine in 1st and fades out in 2nd took it to 2 different shops they said "NORMAL"

Also emailed a transmission shop about the whine - they said "NORMAL"

I spoke with the original owner after finding his phone # in the glove box and he said that the tranny had made that noise from day 1

So I guess we will just have to wait this one out.

I re-evaluated my 4L80E this afternoon and evening. I'd be willing to make a wav file of how it sounds, for MDenny, for comparison purposes, if he asks for it, and has a reasonable way of comparing it to how his truck sounds.

I would feel like an idiot if I complained to the dealer about how mine sounds. Compared to the exhaust notes, the first gear whine is almost impreceptible. So that should serve as a crude point of comparison.

I had the luxury of being able to treat mine gingerly during its first 1500 miles. I ended up with a quiet 4L80E first gear. Now, with 5500 miles, I'm pretty sure it's doing what it will be doing for the rest of its life.

The 4L80E whine in 1st gear is completely normal. You'll hear it in the trucks, vans, and suburbans.

You'll hear it in an Allison transmisson as well. Most of the time you can't hear it over a diesel, but you will hear it with the 8.1L, especially on deceleration.

My tranny was silent in 1st gear until around 15K, at which point it started to make a faint whining noise. In the next several K it started to get louder and louder. By 18K the tranny coughed up the torque converter. After it was replaced my tranny is back to silent (I now have about 48K on it).

Well I went to the dealership yesterday afternoon to deal on the pickup. Of course they said it was normal....was part of the "heavy duty" part of the transmission.

Ended up buying the pickup anyway. 36000 miles on a 2002 2500HD 6.0 crew cab short box. They replaced the engine, tranny, transfer case, front diff, stereo, etc with the GM warranty in the last few thousand miles then the guy turned it in on trade for a half ton. Comes with tinted windows, spray in liner, LT, canopy, running boards, aftermarket exhaust and is in PERFECT condition except the whine and one of the driving lights is out. I will try to get them to fix the light tomorrow for me, but other than that the wife and I are happy.

Traded in the 1500 1/2 ton that had a tired 125000 miles and needed a lot of work. Got the new pickup for 24900 before trade so we were pretty happy.

Thanks for the input everyone....sorry no help on what the dealership said, but I figured they would say everything is A-OK to make the sale.

(Of course they offered no warranty on any of the parts they replaced since it was under GM warranty and that expired 200 miles ago!!) :driving:

I was told by the service manager that if I had come in from off the street and bought the very same engine myself that they would give me a 12/12000 warranty, but since they were replaced as part of the original warranty through the dealership that GM would only honor the 36/36000 warranty that the truck came with. I thought it was kind of crappy that the dealership wouldn't back their "new" engine that they were so proud that they replaced, but it was a very clear and definate "tough luck".
