Tires and Brakes..and more

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone.

I recently purchsed a 1995 Sierra from my cousin. (See the pics forum) It has the 5.7L, 4WD, a 4 inch lift (body lift), 15" MT wheels, and 35" BFG Mud Terrains on it...among other things. As far as I know, the brakes are stock. The pads need replacing and I am not sure what to get. Funds are limited, I can't really spring for a new front brake set-up...especially because I think a nice upgrade would require new wheels too. Speaking purely on speculation there....

Anyhow, I will be in North Dakota for a year and plan on doing a lot of hunting and fishing, etc. So I want an off road tire. At what point do I need to replace the tires I have? (I am planning on replacing with the same if it matters.) I think they are about 5 years old, but the tread looks decent and they have been rotated as required.

How deep/shallow is the tread before you all say it is time for new rubber? I have seen a few small cracks on the treads, but otherwise they appear to be in good shape. I wll be driving from Southern CA to Fargo in this truck so I want the rubber to be good to get me there.

That said, new rubber when I get there or before I go? I know there are no real hard answers here, just looking for insight and though processes you all would go through with this info.

Also, for the brakes, what pads do you recommend? I want the best I can get without spending $123456789 per pad.

Is ceramic best?

Also, I will be replacing the transfer oil and the differntial oil very soon. Should I replace them with Mobil 1? I run it in the engine, but believe it is standard oil in the cases.

Thanks in advance everyone.
