fluids

which fuilds are better, royal purple or amsoil.  i am going tio all my fluids with ones have these types.i am doing my front diff, engine, tranny, transfer case, rear diff, and power steering.

 

 

 

Amsoil has worked fine for me in my 93 all around for many years, towing. I doubt there is a huge difference between brands for normal use as long as you change often and stick with synthetic where possible.

I have put over 200k on vehicals using dino oil. The change interval is far more important to service life of vehical than the whether the oil is syn or dino. While I still use syn in one vehical as a test bed, I do not nor plan to use it in my newer truck as I change it every 2000 to 2500 miles because it is not driven much.

I am not saying syn is not a better oil by design, what I am saying is that change intervals to remove contamination in time is far more important in extending engine life. Dirty oil is dirty oil syn or dino and dino oils are a lot better today than they were 20 or 30 years ago too. I remember when new dino oil was SC rated too and today it is now SL and when I used to buy SA oil for some old tractors. Also with cheaper dino oils, frequent changes are more economically feasable too!

I don't know what year truck is or what transfer case you have,but If you have the "Auto-Trac" transfer case I WOULD NOT use anything but the GM fluid for it (part#12378508)

We have had a few customers here try synthetic fluid in their automatic transfer cases....it wasn't pretty!!

If you have a manual transfer case then you'll be allright with synthetic transmission fluid.

snoman, I wasn't reffering the "syn vs dino" to you. I was making a wisecrack about the other post on synthetic oil that "to me" got way out of hand and off the original post. I remember Dino oil that was rated SC as well, and I also remember when gas was 14 cents a gallon and one of the only places they used synthetic was in jet engines. Man , am I dating myself or what. :)

They are both quality fluids, the only difference would be that AMSOIL has been around since 1972 and has a little more blending time on the market. For ease of purchase, which is a major issue for most, Mobil 1 is a quality product that is easy to get, unless Royal Purple is for you. I'm seeing Royal Purple more and more now. So it is just a matter of which one is easier to get. Wal-Mart's price on Mobil 1 is pretty good. They will all serve you well with regular maintenance.

 

As for your transfer case, above posts are correct use only the Auto-Trac from GM if you have the automatic transfer case. AMSOIL is working on a replacement for that application. I just don't know if and when it will be available.

Yes but the syn oil used in jet engines back then was mostly ester based and not compatable at all with dino oil. They used it because of the tempature extremes that the oil in a jet engine can see that is beyond the range of dino oil stock.
