pickin up a '86 C60 dump truck

I hope this Sunday I will be getting a 1986 C60 dump truck. GVW 26,000# with a 6yard dump. This will be my first medium duty truck. My questions has to do with the 366CI industrial motor.

 

Isn't this a 6.0? My 2000 Silverado has a 6.0. Whats the difference? I am in California, do these need or have any smog devices.

 

The guy I am buying it from says the right side exhaust leaks sice the bolt always seems to get worked loose. After I get it is there a way to tighten it and prevent it from coming loose again?

 

Also the air compressor for the brakes wobbles. He says he has replaced the bolt many, many times and they always break. So he just stopped replacing them and he hasn't had a problems. What do you think??

The biggest difference will be in the Fuel injection vs. carb.  Different casting, etc.

 

 

 

 

No, the biggest difference is that its a DIFFERENT MOTOR, just cuz gm made them both dosen't mean that they have any similarities. They are totally different in everyway.

 

Its like comparing a ford sowerstroke to a Toyota 4 banger.....

Ahh.. GM rounded up on the newer 6 liters :cheers: So the commercial 366CI is a true 6 liter.

 

 

Anyway back to the Medium Duty truck questions.

The 86 366ci is a big block motor with the truck block (tall block), same as the 427 truck block, not to be cunfused with the car big blocks I.E. 396, 402, 427, 454.

The deck height is taller on the truck blocks than it is on the car block.

The current 6.0L is a small block design just like the 4.8L and the 5.3L

Bore = 4.000" stroke =3.622"

 

366ci (big block 6.0L tall deck)

Bore = 3.935" Stroke = 3.760"

Yes, the old 366 (6.0L) is a tall deck big block, nothing in common with the new 6.0L LS-1 small block. As far as emission controls are concerned, yes, in most areas of California you will have to get that thing smogged (idle test, no dyno) Those trucks had an evap. system, 1 or 2 air pumps, a thermostatic air cleaner, and usually an EGR valve. Not too bad. As far as the wobbling brake compressor is concerned, I used to work on a lot of those trucks, and that wobble is usually caused by the pivot bolt holes in the air brake compressor mounting plate becoming egg-shaped due a loose pivot bolt (it's a bear to get to). Once those holes wear, no matter how tight you get that pivot bolt, it still will come loose. To fix it, you have to remove the compressor and replace the plate. Not a fun job, but at least the parts are not too expensive. Yes, the exhaust manifolds used to like to come loose too, but check to make sure the missing bolts didn't break off in the head. Those were pretty good trucks, all in all.

I drove it home yestarday, about 70 miles. It seems that the 2speed differential is worn a little or I need to learn how to drive it better. Going from 4Lo to 4Hi just seems harder to sinc-up than the other differential shifts. This was my first time driving a truck this size. One thing that had me concern at first, coming over the hills from where I purchased it, it would misfire around the 25 to 3000 rpm range.

 

I found out I do need to have it smogged. So I will have to tighten up the exhaust and snoop around the motor compartment for cracked vacuum lines and then take it down for a smog check.

 

The dumper hydraulics are in great shape, the box is a little beat up not to bad. I didn't see any rust on the cab.

It almost didn't start when I stopped for gas. I was a little concerned after I shut it off if that it would start again. The guy who I bought it from said sometimes it wouldn't want to start because the starter would be hot since it was real close to the exhaust manifold.

 

Like you said all in all its a good truck.

 

Thanks for the info on the compressor. Sounds like a winter project. If I have questions I will try to find you here in the forums.
