89 GMC Ignition timing connector

Recommended Posts

I recently installed a rebuilt dist on my 89 GMC 350. To set the initial timing I am supposed to disconnect the Timming connector which is supposed to be tan and black and located in (the wiring harness ????) by the distributer. I cannot find this connector. Can anyone give insight as to where this connector is.

Thanks

Dave

If I remember correctly,on a '89 it should be taped to the harness under the black plastic relay cover on the pass. side of the engine compartment,or along that same harness as it goes to the engine. They used black tape to hold it to the split wire loom which makes it harder to see, also remember that the truck is older, so the wires may be dirty/discolored and hard to spot. Hope this helps

On my 89 burb it is on the firewall on the drivers side near master cylinder and it is not tan either as I recall (I have not access it for a while) and is a single wire inline disconect.

A 89 Suburban has a totally different wiring system from a 89 pickup.

This is true and why I qualified my answer but in his first post did not say if it was a P/U. Van, Blazer or Burb either.

i had the exact same problem with mine when i was trying to set the timing up.

on my truck (this is an 87 K20), that connection was on the driver's side just under the master cylinder.

try to time the engine without this disconnected and you will run like poop...lol

good luck.

Well, none of your suggestions have panned out. There was a two wire connector under the m/c but it is not the timing connector. Can someone maybe tell me what their timing is set to with the timing connector connected and a warm engine. With it running the best by trial and error, my timing is about 2 degrees advanced above the timing index.

Thanks

Dave

I run my 89 at 10 BTDC and I use premium and it runs a lot better that way than stock timing with 87.
