another torsion bar ques.

Recommended Posts

yeah there's a lot of t-bar post but none of them told me what i want to know. i want to make my 05 1500 std cab, 4x4, short bed, silverado sit level. i've heard turn your stock ones up till its level but no more than 1.5 inches, replace the t-bar keys with ford keys, buy aftermarket keys, put HD t-bars in, or buy a lift kit. well i don't want a lift kit, yet. but i want to lift the front of my truck to the same height as the rear of my truck. if i turn my stock keys say 1" or 1.5" is that going to hurt my front susp. or void my warranty. i don't do much offroadin' just enough to keep my wife mad with some mud on the truck ever now and then. plus its a stock truck (for now). later down the road i'm going to purchase a lift, but on military pay, i'm gonna keep the cost to a min. thanks for the help in advance.

A inch or a inch and a half is not going to hurt anything but if you level it and carry any load at all in the rear or tow it will sit nose high and rear low which looks funkier than a slight nose low attitude. A truck should always be a bit lower in front unlaiden.

thanks, yeah i know but i only haul off the trash. there's almost never anything back there. so you think if i only lift it an inch or so i'll be good. even if it does sit perfectly level, maybe a little low in the front, that would be fine but as it sits now, it looks like a drag truck on stilts.

Yes a inch to a inch and a half is no problem but lacking a Tbar unloaded tool at the very least, jack the truck up when adjusting them and it does not hurt to lube the adjuster bolts either to make future adjustments easier with something heavier than WD40 too.

You will hurt the ride quality, a 1.5" torsion lift brings you to within 1" of the downtravel stop. That shows up as a pogo feel. If all of a sudden, on a rough patch of pavement, you can't keep the foot on the pedal or have conversation without a stutter, you ave experienced, shock topout. The shock limits downtravel on the front wheels, so beware of reducing it with a torsion lift. Just be prepared to lengthen the shocks as a remedy.

That really depends on the relative height of front end now as it might be sagging bit now because Tbars settled some so I would not make such a general statement for 1 1/2 inches.

on an 05? Anyway i did 2" of lift, and completely trashed the ride, until I extended the shocks using spacers. Now the hard stop limits downtravel. The downside is there is potentially more stress placed on the TB's, as there is more uptravel capacity. This is definately a hack technique, moderation is important.

It is possible when Tbars break in a new truck especailly some of the softer ones. The tie them down real tight in shiping so the Tbar is loaded a lot for a while and can "settle" some.
