Bug Guards

Recommended Posts

Last August I put a bug guard on my truck. Ever since then the rubber trim around the window has made a sound due to the turbulence. Has anyone else experienced this and what are you doing to fix it. Thanks.

Mountaneer Tom, has the cure so you're in luck!!!

He applied some dbl sided sticky tape to his windshield molding and the noise is gone...

I'm sure he'll tell you what to do and he may even have the part number for the tape, when he checks back in... hang tight, and welcome to the Forum Ed.

Welcome to the site EDZ Z71.

Yep, Shaners is right, I had the same problem on my '99 and that noise was driving me crazy!.  I used some 3M brand Molding Tape that I got at my local Advance Auto Parts.  I used the 1/2 wide size.  You can get them in a few different lengths, but I have a roll right now that is 1/2 inch X 15 feet and the part number on the package is 03614 (in the lower right corner).

As far as applying it, I cleaned the underside of the molding and the part of the window that in covers with some rubbing alcohol.  It was VERY dirty under there.  I measured the length of the molding and cut me a piece of the tape to the same length, then applied it to the underside of the molding first.  It has that red plastic type of peel off backing so you don't have to worry about it sticking to the window yet.  After I got it on the molding, I started at the top and peeled the backing off and pressed it down as I went along.  That's all there was too it.  Some people have used some type of sealant in a tube, but i thought the tape might be less messy.  Either way will work.  I Can't remember exactly how long it's been on there, but it's probably around a year or a little less and it hasn't loosened up any at all.  And best of all, the noise is gone!

Good luck with yours and again, welcome to the site.

Welcome to GMTC EDZ Z71, you arent alone, that problem is well known and addressed pretty clearly above!  My 2000 has a slight wind noise form the molding that my wife swears only I can hear.  I will end up putting some tape under it too.  Good Luck.!

I don't have a specific answer for this problem but I learned a couple of years ago that I don't need a bug shield at all. I started to us Zaino and after a couple coats of Z-2, the bugs just wipe off when I wash the truck (cars). I use it on my windshield as well. Same thing, they just was off. Not a lot of elbo grease either.

Welcome to the forum. It's a nice place.

To be honest, my bug shield doesn't really help with the bugs a whole lot, especially when driving through some of the swampy areas around here, but it has stopped a couple rocks, so thats good.

Up North here where they put alot of stuff on the roads in the winter, bug shields help alot against stone chips.  The only bug shields that work fairly well for bugs are those old style straight up and down verticle kind.

Hey Guys thanks for the replys. I thought about using some kind of rubber stuff in a tube but was very unsure. I really like the idea of the 3M tape. I will definately put the purchase on some today and get that noise gone. Thanks.
