Storage Compartment

Recommended Posts

Hi folks -

I'm the proud owner of a brand new GMC 2500HD crew cab that I picked up last weekend. The dealer was tripping over himself to throw rebates, etc at me. I thoroughly enjoyed the test drive, and went for it.

Now, question: the extended cab offers, as an option, a dealer-installed, lockable storage compartment that fits under the rear seats. That same compartment is not orderable with the crew cab because it won't fit (seats are different.) Does anyone know of anything similar that will fit under the crew cab's seats? I have things like a small tool bag, bungees, jumper cables, etc, that I want to keep stored inside the truck. But I don't want them flying around in the back.

Any ideas? Thanks!

DU-HA makes one that goes on the shelf behind the rear seats. It's not cheap $150 but it is made from very heavy gauge plastic and it's working fine for me.

Perfect. That's precisely the kind of thing I'm looking for. Thanks!

I made a set of custom wood boxes that sit under the seats on mine. There's a lot of room under there, and if you capture all the stuff in boxes, it doesn't slide around.

I looked and looked for plastic boxes that would fit and coudn't find anything, so I made my own. The seat profile when it is lowered is not easy to work with. I wanted to be able to drop the seat backs for the hounds.

Right now, I have a box under each seat and stuff packed in all the nooks and crannies. I have a socket set, wrenches, 4-way screwdriver, fire extinguisher, wiper blades, snow brush, towel (in a tube) and all sorts of other crap under there. I noticed my jumper cables were laying on the floor in the shop just tonight. I need to find them a home...

Those Du-Ha boxes look pretty nice though. I was cleaning out my truck today and noticed there was a lot of room behind the seat when it is in the normal upright position. That wouldn't work for da mutts though, as I usually fold the seats down when they're ridin'.

I do the same thing for my little buddy when he's in the truck. What are you worried about with the Du-Ha box? That the dogs will get into it and pull the stuff out? Or is it more a space concern?

I'm afraid they'd step all over my stuff. Muddy paws and such...

We have 3 mutts, and one gets a little grouchy when "someone's sitting on me! Grrrrr!!", so the crew with the seats folded down should give them (and him) plenty of space.

Nice lookin' Yeller Lab there, Jason! "Are we goin' for a ride? Huh? Are we? Are we? Get in the truck and drive will ya?!!"

Heh, thanks. He's my little buddy and definitely enjoys ridding in trucks with me. I found that by folding the rear seats forward, he doesn't have to jump as high to get into the truck. That and his claws don't hit leather. It works out well. He usually finds a spot in the back, curls up, and goes to sleep while I'm driving along.

That DU-HA box does look neat. I think Cabela's sells it also in the Truck/ATV catalog. Couple of points though.... you have to flip the seat cusion then the back rest to access this arean AND you would have to relocate the tire changing tools which are UNDER that panel that the DU-HA box sits on or you will never get them out. Certainly doable, just points to keep in mind.

The DU-HA fits in there snug enough that I didn't have to bolt mine down. I haven't had a problem yet. This way I can move it to get to the jack tools easily.

Dewfpo...... That's good, 'cause there is some good little cubby space under there also. I may get one of these (I just got my truck on Friday) and also make something to contain stuff under the seats as well.

Hey folks -

Just to let those who are interested know: my DU-HA arrived yesterday. I spent about 10 minutes installing it, including bolting it down to the flaps in the back.

AND you would have to relocate the tire changing tools which are UNDER that panel that the DU-HA box sits on or you will never get them out.

Not exactly true, actually. One of the reasons the DU-HA comes with the front strap is that you can take it off, completely. With the strap off (and the box empty,) you can flip the whole thing forward, which opens both flaps. In fact, I had to do that to properly bolt it down. Works great.

Thanks for the suggestion. It's exactly what I needed. :-)

Good to hear it fits well. I was more thinking of acessing the tire tools, etc with the box full of stuff. In any event it seems you gain more usable storage with the box than you lose due to restricted access underneath. There are certainly things I want to have "somewhere" that I do not need to routinely get to. I'll probably be getting one.
