200 engine temp, 2500HD w/ 6.0

Recommended Posts

My 01 2500HD, 6.0, CC, 4WD has always ran right below 210F since Ive owned it. Im the second owner. Looks like its around 200F I guess, occasionally 210F.

Recently I thought about changing out the T-stat to a 180F. Well, no one has a 180F that I have found. And, to my surprise the factory one isnt a 195F as I expected it to be. Its supposedly a 186F. I figured it was running 200F since it had a 195F in it. My error.

What temp are others seeing on their similar trucks? Should I not worry about the 200F? Id like to see it a bit lower, but I dont know if its possible.

Ive seen an engine coolant temp study online that seemed to show engine life and performance was optimal at 180-185F.

Don't mess with the stat, the PCM relies on that motor to be at a certian temp to provide the proper fuel/air mix and timing curves, etc.

Right on, Im trying to see what temp that is for others with the same truck?

I wonder if my t-stat is starting to go and thats why Im at 205ish instead of 185ish

Mine has always been right around 200-210...almost never moves...

First time I ever saw it move after warming up was a few months ago when my whole grill got iced over in a storm. Was having to stop ever now and then to scrape the ice of my windshield, the defroster couldn't keep up. There was about 2 inch of ice across the whole grill when I stopped to see why it was heating up, I mean I wouldn't think of a truck getting too hot in -5 F weather.

Changing a t-stat alone will often not make any difference in running tempature if no other changes are made.

Hook up some electric fans and you can probably get your temps down, but as mentioned, get the cpu recalibrated.

With a 186* stat and my Wester's tune tuned for it... I still run 200* :uhoh: !!! I'll get e-fans soon.

my HD runs around 200-210.

My 04 6.0 2500hd engine temp runs at 210.The auto trans will not shift into overdrive until somewhere around 180. :uhoh:

Its starting to look like everyone 6.0 runs in the 205 temp range. Looks like mine is fine in that case. I was thinking it would run closer to the factory t-stat temp of 186.

What do you mean, ""The auto trans will not shift into overdrive until somewhere around 180.""?

Ive never seen my truck run at 180, yet, my truck shifts into overdrive all the time.

My 01 6l runs at about 208 209. As for the trannys, the computer is programed not to shift til certain temps to help the tranny warm up and save the tranny. If you start you truck in real cold weather and take of, you will notice that it will take a while to shift from 1 to 2. That is why.

He's talking about engine temp, not tranny temp.
