Using Farm Died Diesel

Recommended Posts

I just bought an '05 Duramax and was wondering if using #2 Farm Died diesel instead of over the road diesel will hurt anything on the Duramax? I'm not saying that I would use the died fuel but it would be a comfort knowing that if I was running low I could add some fuel that I am already using on the farm, and not do any unnecesary damage to the engine?

It would not cause any engine damage, but will leave stains on internal fuel system parts which could cause expensive "questions" later on.

Ditto what BlackSilver said. The only difference in the two is the dye used (based on taxes paid). Some places are pretty strict about it if your found on the road with the 'farm' fuel in your tank.

Yup, it cost a guy I know 10 GRAND! He had farm diesel in his pickup and they stuck his tank at the sale barn.

I had heard the farm diesel was higher sulfer content.

In Wyoming, the "on-road" diesel is bright green. It looks like prestone when you're pumping it in your tank.

Putting all tickets and fines aside, I think moscow_silverado is just asking if the dyed fuel will have any adverse affects on the engine operation. Given the choice of running out of fuel or putting in a few gallons of dyed fuel to get you to a gas station, I would put in the dyed stuff, but not to make a habit out of it.

yup 71gmc, off road is high-sulfur....

Here in Ohio I heat with heating oil and I have asked my distributor and has told me that with his fuel source anyway that there is no difference in fuel quality just the dye and that sometimes it is dyed at the terminals where you pickup a load for tanker truck to deliver.

In MN a guy put in a few gallons of his farm diesel to make it into town to get filled up at the on-road pumps but got busted by the State of MN before he made it to the fuel station. Cost him $5,500 State fine and $5,500 Fed fine if I remember the news story right.

I wouldn't take the chance even though your Duramax can burn it without hurting anything.

My two cents.

Yep it is simply not worth it as the losses far can exceed the gains if you are caught.

Here at OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY's Agriculture campus, the '93 Cummins Horse truck gets a fill-up of dyed grape fuel every two or three days. All our vehicles have State plates (Government Plates). nobody follows the rules here because money would be given right back to the school.

The 12 valve cummins is a poor pick to observe performance because the thing is a dog.... BUT, it gets run all day, everyday going barn to barn carting horse crap or on the road for feed... and it still runs fine.
