Quiet Aftermarket muffler?

Recommended Posts

Sounds a little crazy. But, FIL wants to open up the exhaust to lower the EGTs on his '02 DMax. However, MIL drives the truck plenty, plus this is their camper hauler, so they want it fairly close to stock as far as sound goes. Is there anyone a particular muffler that provides an OEM like sound, but opens up the exhaust?

I know if this was a gasser, Dynomax is the way to go, but I don't know how the Dynomax is with the diesels. Any difference?

Edit: I see Dynomax offers an Ultraflo system. Anybody have it and care to comment on it?

Flowmaster makes some. I believe they are 70 series. In any case they market them as "Big Block" mufflers for tow rigs, motor-homes and the like. They are only slightly louder than stock but relieve a lot of back pressure. They are large, too big for most cars. I wish I had them on my truck but It'll cost me $300 to upgrade from the 60's I have now.

you can also try FLO_PRO. they make a something called "the Bgi Oval". Most people have had luck with them.

the problem will be if you lessen the backpressure with a less restictive muffler, you will most likely get resonance or "droan" in the cab.

the stock muffler has two pipe in and 2 pipes out. the thing is, one of the pipes coming out is completely closed off. its a resonation chamber. when i too mine off, the second outlet was closed off. only a single exit, the other was "fake".
