MPG on 02 HD 6.0??

Recommended Posts

Anyone else getting this kind of mileage?? I have been consistently getting 8 to 9 mpg with hardly any idling. Last 2 tanks were 8.3mpg. I live in PA and drive mostly short trips back and forth to work. Truck is 2002 Hd 6.0 with 4.10. MPG have been so bad that I was considering trading it in on a Duramax. Truck only has 16,600 miles on it though. Any suggestions or opinions would be greatly appriciated.

With a 2 mile commute to work, and very little driving anywhere else, I get around 8 MPG's with my '01 6.0L. I attribute this to the fact that the engine computer nerver gets out of the "cold" loop, and that winter blends of fuel don't allow for very good MPG's.

On the plus side though, I only have to buy gas about every 5-6 weeks!!!

If I throw a half dozen 10-15 mile trips in there my milage improves quite a bit...

Thanks, you are probably correct. Did u decide if u r going to buy the diesel or keep the 01. I'll probably have to keep mine since we bought a 05 Tahoe in Dec.

I've got an 02 2500HD 6.0L with 285's and I get around 11.5 this time of year. That includes 15 minute warm-ups in the morning, Stop and go traffic to work, and 75-80 on the highway almost every day. My only pain is that I have to fill up about twice a week! :D

My CrewCab 2500 6.0L with the family inside got 18.3 miles per gallon during a 50 mile highway drive to a neighboring city. This was at 55mph with cruise on. Some mild hills and no Climate Control A/C. Winds were calm and ambient air temp was 35F. This using 87 octane MN 10% blended gasoline. My truck has the 3.73 rear and has 10K miles on it.

I'm satisfied with it performance and economy when not pushing it hard. I also have 50 PSI in the front tires and 80 PSI in the rears.

I just hope gasoline prices don't race upward uncontrollably like it has recently. If gasoline goes over $2.50 per gallon I'll have to limit my driving even more than I do now. :D

With not driving far and the truck not having time to warm up you will keep seeing 8-9 in the winter, probably 10-12 in the summer. If you get out and drive it more at freeway speeds you will see more like 12-14. My 01 ave around 13, during the week I have a 5 min drive to work, but weekends I usually take a 50 mile one way trip to my parents. When I was making an hour commute daily I was pushing 15 mpg regularly.

Getting the diesel may not be a good idea either. Short drives with little warm up can be hell on them. Plus as little driving as you do, assuming you don't drive much besides to work, you won't recover the added cost of buying a DMAX.

I live south of Pittsburgh, PA and I take many short trips in my 01 2500HD, excab lb 6.0 4:10 4x4 and I always get around 8mpg. If I do all highway runing empty I get 15mpg.

All I can say is its a big truck, you just have to feed it a lot... :D

I reset my "business trip" meter every tank. I've noticed I'll get about 10.5 on to/from work (4 miles). If I take it on a longer trip the average mileage for that tank will climb up towards 12.5, which means I'm getting better than that on a longer trip, but it's averaging with the 10.5 from before. I haven't been on any long distance interstate trips yet, but I'm hoping to while I can still afford the price of gas...

My Bro-In-Law says he uses the cheapest gas in his '02 and recently got 20 mpg on a road trip. He said he gets drastically different mileage depending on which brand of fuel he uses. I'm wondering if the different pumps shut off at different fuel levels at the different stations...

Yer about right on your gas milage, I had a 2001 HD 4X4 with the same gear set up and got 9 mpg around town and took it the Tennesse and got 13 mpg on the highway. My Duramax is getting 16mpg around town and 21mpg on the highway.

Thanks everyone for the info. I love the truck and I'm not complaining. Just wanted to see what everyone else is getting. Mileage does get better in the summer with the summer blend of gas. I do drive some other than work and in the winter I tow a two place snowmobile trailer, even worse gas mileage then. I think i'll try letting the truck warm up alittle before I head out. Thanks again.

Empty 10.73 mpg consistent but note running larger tires. Dont know how much difference that makes. Pulling trailer 8.5 mpg depending on terrain using 87 octane
