Is the 37's worth the extra $$$ than 35's?

If I get 37's,

Is gas mileage worse than 35s?

Can I still tow safely?

Do I keep my ABS?

Do I need to get new gears (stock 4:10)

Is there any difference off-road over the 35's?

Probably a little

You can still tow but you'll want a drop hitch and probably a load leveling system for stability.

Yes

Yes, a minimum of 4.56's IMO. You wouldn't hurt yourself going to 4.88's especially if you intend to tow

Anywhere from 3/4" to maybe a little over 1" more clearence depending on manufacturer

Yup.....I love my 37's...worth every penny! and its ually more than 3/4" -1" difference. Most swampers run true to their size, maybe even larger. A 35"x12.5 ssr, is 35.5 on a 15x8" rim, a 35"x12.5 GY MTR is about 34.75" on a 15x10. a 37" mtr is more like 36.8 on a 15x8. rim width will play apart, as will manufacturer and wheel size.

Gas mileage depends...For example...I got worse mileage on my Jeep with 35" swampers than I do now with 37" MTR's. The Mtr's weigh alt less, and w/ 4.88's, i'm not spinning the motor as fast on the highway. but the engine is still in its powerband...if I had numerically lower gears, I would be out of the power band, need to give it more gas or run in a lower gear to compensate, and would burn more fuel. the same applies to your truck. PLaces like randys ring and pinion have a gear calculator online to help you determine the perfect gear to get your trucks perfomance as close to stock as possible while running larger than stock tires.

Last...37's are a BIG tire. plan on breaking alot of stuff if you wheel this thing in anything other than a muddy farm field..even then lets hope you dont get traction all of a sudden when your tires are spinning! I'd worry about alot more than just having to swap gears.

Killer Jeep, SkyHigh  :chevy:

I pieced myself a lift from eBay for my 96XJ. Should work out to 3.5~4" .

Can't wait to start tearing it apart !!

Thanks man. I like it. when you lift it , watch your control arm angles...and be prepared to have to buy a CV shaft/ SYE if its a newer XJ, and you still may need to even if its not a 96+.

yah i got a "kit" on the 89 xj....

Whoa.... now THAT's a bitchin' XJ :D

I've got a lot to learn still 'bout lifting my XJ, but I think I'm on the right track-

got some Teraflex adjustable control arms, RE disconnects, Currie steering components, RE track bar...

But I skimped in back.... cRusty's 3.5" aal (yeah, I know :chevy: ...)....

I'm redoing it all- all new bushings front and back, new ball joints up front...

I'll post some 'fore and after shots :)

But damnnnnnnn you got a bad XJ :D

Thanx man.

Sounds like your offt to a good start, but if you plan on really wheeling it hard, watch those tera arms, the hard poly bushings love to rip off axle bracketry.

I may look into the RE arms. May even want to look into longarm setup like claytons. Nothing wrong with short arms on XJ's....just watch those brackets, we have Tera longarm son the red one, and have ripped off the OEM brackets. I picked up some RE 1/4" thick replacement brackets and welded them up.

The AAL isn't bad, more flex, softer springs...I have used those before on a buddys rig. We had rusty's leaf on the red one, but cracked the pack, and swapped to RE 4,5 XD.

Ahhh bushings and balljoints, FUN! routine maintenance sucks...in the last month i have replaced all 9 of my super flex bushings in my control arms, 4 new tie rod ends, 2 new hubs, new balljoints, new pinion bearing, new front driveshaft, been through 3x rear driveshafts, and the brake slides. I've been pretty tired of screwing with jeeps...so this weekend its time to go beat on them!

Jeep= just empty every pocket :P !!!!!!

Thanks for the insight. This will be my first real offroader, and the budget's tight !!! Any inside info you want to share, I'm all ears !!!!!

Well you figured out what it stands for :)

If you have the dana 35 rear axle, ditch it when you can. A 8.25 should serve you well on 33's, look for a 44 if your going to 35's. The front 30 should hoold up just fine to 33's, and even 35's as long as you have the 297x u joints, if you end up replacing them, use the spicer 760x (same size/dimensions, but stronger)

Also you didn't mention bumsptops....get some! even 31's will tear up your fenders on an XJ thats not bumpstopped properly. And even then you may find yourself trimming a bit. thats about the only advice I have...if you have any more specific questions as the build progresses, feel free to shoot me a PM. Oh yah and lets see some pics when its done!

LOL this is kinda funny, This is your first offroader, my first truck....this could work

BTW after the weekend we'll have to talk about the wester tune, but i'm saving my $ to make sure i don't trash something expensive on the jeep first, before i blow it on the tow rig :D
