Do I need a longer Driveshaft?

Recommended Posts

I have a 2002 2500hd standard cab long bed 4x4. I was curious if anyone has a lift on a truck that is a similar configuration to mine. I have been told i do need one and i have been told i don't, if i just add shims into a bracket holding the driveshaft. Just trying to fiqure things out before i tear my truck apart.

Not necessarily but it some cases it wouldn't hurt because the input shaft isn't in as far as it can or possibly should be. This is assuming you are going to lift it no more than 6" and that you don't have an Autotrac transfer case because I'm pretty sure that does require a new driveshaft.

Yeah I am doing a 6" lift and i do not have the autotrack transfer case.

The magic number for autotrac is 4.5". If you drop your front diff more than 4.5" you may have to change your front driveshaft to a longer one because with autotrac the front shaft turns all the time the truck is moving and because these driveshafts use slip yokes you end up getting driveline vibration. They also use slip yokes on the selectable(Floor Shift) so if you were to get a vibration you would only notice it when the truck is in 4WD. If you stay at 4.5" or less then you should be OK. Check with the manufacturer of the lift kit that you decide to purchase and they should be able to let you know. I think most of the kits out there do not need a front driveshaft change but the only one I know of for sure is RCD. :smash:

I know on my new truck i had the front drive shaft replaced. the rear one was kepted stock but I am sure they had to shim it or not. how big of a lift are you going with?
