power steering issues?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had issues with there steering being difficult to turn at a stop? My '04 acts like there is no power steering when I am stopped. I have even put it in neutral and reved up to about 2000 rpm, just to see if that would help and it didnt.

I took it in to see if it was covered under warantee, but they said it was due to larger tires. I have 305/55/20's. That isnt too big in my opinion. What do you think?

Take it to a different dealer!

Search there has been alot of talk about this subject, if I remember it has something to do with a sticky valve in the PS pump?

GM knows about it have the dealer check TSB's too?

Enough of these things have power steering/brake (connected systems) problems you think it would be a huge safety issue and have a recall?

Agreed.

This happened right about a month ago with my wife's '02 and naturally the dealership counldn't duplicate the problem. Apparently the valve jarred loose when the tow truck loaded it or they got it to unstick at the dealership and just let it go.

I was also told by a member who posts with the name GM Tech that, if you can get it to a large open area like an empty parking lot, you can get it to unstick by standing on the brake and cutting the wheel hard one way or the other. Apparently this creates enough fluid pressure to unstick the hydro valve and corrects the problem.

I am having a sterring proablem on my 03' with 20k on it. When i turn the wheel it makes a sort of squeaking noise. However, it only makes this noise after driving 10 miles or more. THe more you drive, the louder the noise. I had the truck in the dealer last week and they couldn't get it to make noise. I doubt the drove the truck long enough though. What do you guys think my proablem is?

dont they log the service ticket in a national database, so if one dealer says that it is due to the oversized tires then the otherse wont even look at it? Even if I put the stock rims and tires on, they could still reject service due to the notation of oversized tires. Right?

I had 35X12.5X15's on my jeep wrangler, and never had any issues with steering. I cant believe that a HD truck would have such a weak ps pump to begin with.

Mine every now and then seems to lose power. Usually turning into a parking spot. I am cranking on the whell and all of a sudden it won't turn farther and I am only half way to the lock. Couple times I cam close to getting the car in the next space. Brakes worked fine luckily. The dealer says it is my tires, but I had not heard anything about a TSB so I didn't argue. Anyone know what TSB it is and what trucks it applies to? I got to get my steering clunk and tail gate cables fixed (still haven't gotten a recall letter on that), might as well bother them about a PS pumping too while I am in there.

"99-08 Chevrolet/GMC/Cadillac/Hummer H2 all Full Size Trucks Utiities and Vans Lack of Steering Assist when Stopped or During Parking Lot Type Manuvers - kw brake power oil hard noise booster low #PIT3310 - (Dec 9, 2004)."

This is the title of the doc that the dealer gave me. Doc ID#1576733

It states that if the PS line pressure is correct according to specs, that no other repairs should be attempted as this is a characteristic of the vehicle.

Sounds like GM doesnt know what is wrong, or how to fix it, or they just dont want to pony up the cash to fix a poorly designed steering system.

Maybe if enough people complain GM will do something about it. The dealer also gave me this number to call and register a complaint with GM

1-800-222-1020.
