adding factory trans cooler

Recommended Posts

I bought the kit not thinking about how hard it is to install the long line, the one that goes from cooler all the way back to the tranny. The more I thought about it, I knew there had to be an easier way to do this. Came up with the idea of cutting the existing line just ahead of the engine, and splicing in the front part of the new line using a swagelok stainless steel compression fitting. Found a set of 6 on ebay at a very good price, got all 6 for less than the price of 2. Of course, I only needed one, but who cares? It is only money....

The short line, from aux. cooler to radiator cooler, was easy, and the cooler itself was even easier. Only the long line was giving me grief.

If anyone else trys this, remember this about compression fittings, especially splices or unions like this one.

Hold the center part still with one wrench and turn the nuts on either side with the other wrench. Don't tighten one side and then let it rotate while tightening the other side. And, you gots to put some muscle into it. You are compressing steel line with stainless steel fittings. If it leaks, you didn't tighten it enough.

And don't use brass fittings, those are for copper lines. Stainless fittings are for use on steel lines.
