Oil Filer Relocation

Recommended Posts

I like to change my own oil and I find that the oil filter on my 8.1L is a PITA to get to. There is very little clearance between the filter and the driveshaft u-joint. Has anyone installed a remote oil filter setup? How hard was it to put in. What kind/brand kit was it and wehre did you put it? Some pics would be nice.

I bought the kit a couple of years ago but never got around to installing it. I had a box of AC Delco filters I wanted to finish and thought I would change to a larger Mobil 1 filter. Since then Mobil 1 finally came out with a filter for the 8.1. I have been changing oil every 5,000 miles since and just learned to live with the oil spills. I have an old sweatshirt I wear every time as there are oil stains all over it.

Anyway, the problem I had was finding an easy place to mount the remote filter. The picture in the Summit catalogue had it in the wheel well (didn't seem like a good idea to me). The other concern was clearance of the hoses around the drive shaft.

There used to be some good mounting instructions out there on the web for the dual remotes that Amsoil sells. I just haven't taken time to dig into more. If you find something that works well on the four wheel drive I would be interested.

Ahh, I remember it like yesterday, oil running down my arm and all over the front drive shaft, good times! :wtf:

My first attemt to combat this was to puncture and drain the filter using a small flat blade screwdriver. Worked, but not as well as I'd hoped.

Then at a swap meet I hit the jackpot. I've never seen these things anywhere else, but they're great. It's a push lock fitting with a 5/16" outlet and a sharp fluted inlet. You take two of these things and push the fluted end into the bottom of each of the filter chambers to drain the filter. I ran about a foot of 5/16 hose so I can drain the filter and the pan at the same time.

Like I say, I haven't seen these things anywhere else, but a buddy of mine engineered his own with two small double ended push lock fittings from the local hardware store and it works OK.

Hope this helps, NO MORE OILY ARMS!!
