Block Heater

Recommended Posts

I ordered a 2005 GMC 2500HD Crew Cab with the 6.0 and ordered the engine block heater. I noticed it goes into the block on the drivers side. I thought it kept the oil warm, but appearently not. What does this do when I plug it in? Does it keep the block warm?, and if so how does that affect cold start ups? Thanks for any info.

HDGMC

It is suppose to warm the Antifreeze which inturn warms the block and maybe the oil.

I have mine on a timer to come on about 3 hours prior to me starting my Yukon. Makes for faster warm ups and easier starts.

You can tell the difference between when you do or dont plug in when it is near or below 0!

I believe your block heater keeps the engine warm by providing heat into the antifreeze which surrounds the engine in the water jackets.

I had an air cooled flat four (VW) and that block heater if my memory served me correct was fixed to the bottom of the oil sump and warmed the oil.

Bock heaters make a huge difference when the temp. goes below about -20 F or so. I always plug my engine in-easier starts and much easier on the engine after a cold start.
