95 4L80e temp gauge install

Recommended Posts

Hi 99 -2door

I had a 91 and a 97 with a 454 and 4l80e tranny, and I had to remove the tranny pan and install a drain plug ( drill a hole and weld a drain plug nut) then I installed the temp sensor in the drain plug hole. Worked great, with no problems. I wouldn't tow without a tranny temp. gauge, and I've never had any tranny problems. Best favor the truck mfg's did for the new trucks is put the temp gauge in at the factory . I sure like my 2002, with the 8.1/Allision, with the factory temp gauge. I towed a 10k lb. 5th wheel with the 91 and 97, and now I have a 20k lb. 5th wheel. Good luck with the temp gauge installation, It's worth the trouble.

I have a 93 with the 4L80E. The sending unit is in the drain plug hole. Since all numbers are relative, it is as good as any spot. I use a Phantom gauge. Works great. Only problem is, once it gets hot, which usually happens in some bad spot, like climbing up into Yellowstone on a hot day, pulling off to cool off is almost worse than moving. I've maxed out the temp a few times (@265F). I run amsoil full synthetic. So far no bad shavings in the pan fiilter.
