Turbo for your 8.1 truck?

Recommended Posts

How much interest is there in turbo kits for the 8.1 trucks? I've been talking to STS about this and think we'll be able to put something together. STS produces remote mounted turbo kits. The GM truck kits mount where the stock muffler is now -

The 6.0 trucks see a 58% horsepower increase and 55% torque improvement with 5psi. I expect numbers like this to carry over to the big block. We're putting together a 2004 GTO that will be fed by one of these turbos. I expect that car to make close to 500hp after this and a few bolt-ons are install.

If your wondering about pricing, it would be $3999. if it follows the same structure as the other GM truck kits. I can probably put something together if there is some group interest for any of these.

oh dear God, this is the worst possible time to ask that question Tom. Just got my W-2's and i plan on seeing about $5500 back in taxes this year.....that money has to go someplace. Why not a turbo like i have been wanting for 2 years? I would be very interested. Can you give me the rundown on a basic install of this unit? Maybe how it weighs against some of the other systems, like the Radix, whipple, or some of the others. One thing about this STS is the fact that im sure not gonna want to drive my truck in the rain, snow, sleet, or mud. With a $4000 turbo only about 20" from the ground totally exposed to the elements all the time.

Alot of people have had concerns about the turbo being located under the vehicle since they came out but there hasn't been any problems. Check out these videos ---> http://i.b5z.net/i/u/1473169/f/Video/tacoma4.wmv and http://i.b5z.net/i/u/1473169/f/Video/tacoma3.wmv The owner of STS drives an f-body with this kit. You know how low those cars sits. He drives in the rain and snow with no problems. There is also a "sock" that can go over the filter to protect it if needed.

The install only takes about 4-6 hours and it can be done by most people with basic mechanical ability. Here are some pictures of a 5.3/6.0 install - http://www.ststurbo.com/chevy_pu_install_pics

This system can make more power than some of the other truck superchargers on the market. Turbos produce alot of torque and can also show a very noticeable increase in fuel economy.

T,

Does STS have the system for the 8.1 developed? I live about 30 minutes away from their shop and the last I heard they hadn't been working on it. At what stage in the development are they? I would love to see one for the 8.1 and my Burb would love it. And yes I was serious about being a very willing test mule.

Thanx for the info, Craig

Sign me up boss....with permission from the better half of course. I would rather wait till a kit was developed well enough that I wouldn't have to have it installed, I wanna be able to do the work. Are they gonna work on all body types or just one of them??? Tell em to start with long bed CC first. :)

No problem launching a boat with and STS equipped truck. If your getting that deep in the water your going to need to put a propeller on that too :)

I'm going to talk to STS about this some more in the morning. I had a conversation with one of the guys there last week. He said they could build 8.1 systems. I'll post some more info tomorrow.

I spoke with the owner of STS today. Here is the rundown -

They haven't put a turbo on an 8.1 truck there but he thinks someone might have bought one to do the work himself (no feedback yet). He expects this motor to need a larger turbo to provide the air that will be required. He also feels more comfortable if one of the STS dealers does the upgrade instead of a "regular person". This way they can get everything sorted out and see what will work best for the kits that go into production. So, it looks like there isn't a packaged kit ready to ship for this motor yet but something should be able to be done.

I also asked about the OBS trucks. They don't haven't anything planned for them right now.
