Gap between front fender and body on 2005

Recommended Posts

Hi --

A bit back I mentioned that my 2005 2500HD has an interesting gap between the fender well and the body. You can see it near the front of the fender well area, where the fender well meets the body. This is very noticeable in the winter (in north east) as dirt is flung forward past the fender well and forwards, partly spilling out on the bumper. I noticed that the Denali has something covering this 2 inch gap.

I pointed this problem out to my dealer when I took my truck there for service the other day. They researched, found and ordered parts for it. This problem is not unique to my specific truck. I see the same problem on all 2005s (at least the 2500HDs). So I have to assume they decided to not include this part in manufacturing.

I just went out and looked inside my fender wells for the gap you are talking about. And yes I see the gap. It is wider on the driver side than on the passenger side. And yes the salt and sand get in between the gap and into the bumper. But my 02HD had the same gaps and every time I hose in inside of the wheel wells the road sand comes through the front bumper area. On the other hand, if the gap were closed I'm sure it wouldn't be 100 percent sealed and maybe some of that trapped stuff wouldn't get cleaned out. At least this way it's easy to clean.

Whitesnake01,

When you get the parts installed and have your service invoice back from the dealer, perhaps you could post the parts they used. I've tried with my dealer (who says there is nothing to solve the problem) and would love to get my hands on the parts numbers...if nothing else than to purchase them myself so I could rectify the problem. Thanks.

Here's a part number from an '03 HD. Not sure if it is left or right side, but with the number, perhaps your parts guy can get close to finding both:

GM PART # 88944069

GM LIST: $4.82

DESCRIPTION: SHIELD

Oh yeah, my 2005 Z71 doesn't have this gap on either side.

I just spoke with the sevice manager at the dealership where I got this 05. He said he didn't know of any fix for the gap by the front fender. He said there was a fix for the back wheel, to prevent road grime getting in the brakes. I gave him the part number that was posted here. He said he would get back to me with info. I'll post back when I hear.

Here's the update: Service manager just called. Said that part number isn't for my truck. Said he ordered a pair of some other shield for my 05. A left and a right. It will be a few weeks before I have the first oil change at which time they will install these shields, provided they are the right ones. They didn't seem sure that they had the fix. Stay tuned.

I have no idea if my dealer ordered the right thing, since I picked up the truck after the service dept was closed. But on my paperwork it says they have ordered:

#88979806 - shield 8.153

#24501057 - fastener 1.840

The estimated cost is $29.00 for parts and labor.

  • 3 weeks later...

I ordered the shields a couple of weeks ago, and had them put on today when they did my first oil change. They charged me $10 for the shields and $5 to install. Since it wasn't original equipment I had to pay. While I was there I looked at all the HD's with the same gap. I looked at the half ton pickups and there was the shield already installed from the factory. Service manager couldn't explain why they would do this. I don't think he even realized that there was such a part until I ordered it.

I put the drivers side shield on yesterday. The passenger's side looks like it could use a shield as well but it looks like it is slightly different due the a different shape on the plastic fender liner.

Did they install two different shields on your truck? If so, do you have the passenger's side P/N?

Thanks,

The shield on the passenger side is different. As you know the gap isn't as wide and it is shaped a little different. But you know I have my bill in front of me here and it lists two shields with the same part number . Sorry, 'm no help
