torsion bars

Recommended Posts

I know when I was looking at different torsion bars, there are about 12 sets available from GM. I was told not to go too stiff, since they were not designed for a lighter truck. They range from 3000 to 12,000 load rating. Unfortunately, we found out that the Yukon uses a unique lenght and I only had the originals as an option.

GM torsion bars have small colored tags on them to identify them by load rating and left or right. Maybe the dealer could pull out a 1/2 ton and a 3/4 ton and let you compare lenght and diameter. Also, the ends ahould measure the same. Since there are so many available, some must be interchangable, but I don't know if all are. However, we were fairly far down the road thinking that they were interchangable and length was the only difference. I am not sure if they will interchange, but I believe Rancho makes aftermarket stiffer bars, and that may be the answer.

Check with some alignment or 4x4 shops with experience.

What year and model of truck do you have? I am changing the torsion bars on my 02 3/4 ton Suburban and according to the GM all C,K 1,2,3 Trucks from 00-05 use the same length of bar and have the same ends. The difference being the amount of load that they will carry. What you want to do is go down to the dealer with your vehicle serial number and they will know which ones that you have on your truck. Then ask them for a list of torsion bar options for that series of truck. Each listing will have the maximum torque that can be applied to the bar and depending on your options(Winch,Brush Guard ,etc) you can decide how stiff you want your ride.Hope this helps. :dupe:
