New Truck changeover to Synthetic Oil

I just ordered a new 2500HD, should be here around Christmas/New Years (I hope). I've always used synthetic fluids in everthing I drive, but I've never owned a Vortec engine and I've heard many horror stories about these engines (oil use, piston slap, fouled spark plugs, etc...) but I bought one anyway. I hope I don't regret it.

 

How soon can/should I change the engine oil over to sythetic from the fatory fill on the 8.1L engine?

 

Thanks for any thoughts.

I'd wait till the first oil change, or at least 1000 miles to change over.

I asked Amsoil this same question after I bought my truck and they said "it is recommended, however not mandatory, that the motor be initially operated with petroleum oil up to its first normal drain interval."

 

1.) It allows the high wear metals and machining and assembly debris to collect in an inexpensive motor oil and be flushed out when drained rather than have them circulate for extended periods in a synthetic motor oil. This allows for a cleaner operating environment for the synthetic oil.

 

2.) Any problems that develop in assembly or workmanship can be repaired under warranty before installing the more expensive synthetic motor oil.

Hi Bud,

 

Yes I got the Allison with the 8.1L, 4.11 axles, locker, dual batteries and the 145 amp alternator. I plan on going to larger tires in the future, probably 285's.
