Long term durability

Recommended Posts

My trucks getting close the the end of factory warranty and I'm considering getting an extended. For those of you with high(er) mileage trucks, have you come accross any glaring problems that justify the warranty? Assuming proper maintainance, are there any "typical" repairs in the future that justify buying a warranty? I'm not concerned about little things like window motors, I can afford that stuff so I guess this inquiry is more drivetrain related.

'02 2500HD 6.0 auto 4x4 is the truck in question.

Thanks

soccermom,

It is definately a gamble. I bought an extended warranty on my 99 silverado. The reason for this is because I used the factory warranty about 20 times. There was never any power train or drive train problems, just bells and whistles(int steering shaft 4 times). I purchased the gmpp for around $1500. I used it once before it expired at 100k. It was for the loose bolts on the window regulator(about $50 in labor). So I gambled and lost big time. I can't imagine these trucks having any new mechanical problems in that time frame if they did not have them from the factory(that is with good maintenence practices). They are very reliable trucks ("longest lasting trucks on the road"). If you have not had any major problems with the truck, I would not get the warranty. I now own an 03 DMax and it's warranty will be up in 3k miles. It has not been in the shop yet(knock on wood) except for recalls. I am definately not going to spend $2000 on a warranty I will never use. If something small goes wrong I will be able to pay out of pocket.

Extended warranties can be very helpful, it depends on how you use your vehicle(towing, etc) and how long you plan to keep it. Don't go with a cheap or mail order warranty, you'll only regret it later.

If you have your service work performed, ask them. Watch your deductible amounts and my recommendation is GMPP. It's good at any GM dealership in the US.

I personally feel extended warrenties are a waste of money. If you feel the need for an extended warrenty then your saying this vehicle will break down frequently and could possibly cost me alot of money, if this is the case why did you buy brand that breaks frequently? Dosen't make much sence to me.

i recently had to have my truck towed to the dealer when she wouldn't start. luckily, i had nine days left on my warranty, so i was covered under the original warranty, but it could have easily been a couple weeks later before it happened.

it wouldn't have mattered since i had the extended warranty, but you get the idea...

also, i used the extended warranty as part of the bargaining with the dealer.

I would get it.  A friend of mine lost a tranny in his Yukon XL at around 65,000 miles.  With the extended warrenty it cost him $200 instead of $2000.

In that case it worked great. He is now even for the cost of the warranty. In my case it cost me alot more for the warranty than the use I got out of it. People on this forum seem to really like the extended warranties. If you talk to people on the street that do not know alot about GM and just buy the warranty from a dealer are not as happy. Most of them get talked into the EW's and end up getting burned. I can name more people that did not get the value out of the EW than the ones that did.

I have a '01 version of your truck basically and have had a tranny replaced, A/C switch, power window motor x2, half a clutch, and a few other things, bills would be around $4,000 by now and warranty was ~$1,500. So IMO it was worth it

You also gotta remember..........Some of us here WORK our rigs,

Heavy towing, hauling, snowplowing etc. NO driveways queens...........

Its pretty easy smoking a transfer case, or tranny at $2000 plus a pop

at 60k miles of work !

Funny tho, I usually swap my trucks every 3 years so its always under warranty !

But would buy a GMPP if I was gonna keep it past 3/36.

But snowplowing killes em'

My Caddies....No ex-warranty and run them 5-6 yrs 100k plus miles without a problem except for normal maint. ! (knock on wood!) ,,,,,,,,,,,,,geo

i dont plan on ever buying another extended warranty. too much hassle on what they will and wont cover. bought one for our mini van and maybe had $500.00 worth repairs done to it. the warrany was $1500.00. i agree it is a gamble, but im sure you'll find most people never use them, thats what keep warranty companies in business.

Not if you find the right one. The EW on my truck covers ANYTHING that doesn't naturally wear out. Things like brake pads, battery, headlights, are not covered but anything else is.

The other thing to remember is that you can "wheel and deal" on the cost of warranties as well. Alot of folks don't realize this. The warranty on my truck was originally $2K,I paid $1100.

I usually find extended warrantys a waste of money. Big Time. But with the Duramax diesels, the cost of repairs can be high ( although the engine is warrantied for 100k). I had a 2001 that went to the shop too many times within 36 mo. two diffrent fuel gage sending units $600 & $700 each. Leaking wheel seals, Allison transmission reprogramming (sounded like it boke in half when it slipped and then engaged). My 2002 & 2004 haven't had any problems except the fuel injectors on the 02. Out of warranty, it could cost $4500.00+

That being said... I would only buy a GMPP warranty. Some dealers will sell you their preferred brand, and not seem to know much about the GMPP. They are lying to you and trying to steal from you.
