fuel injected 383

Recommended Posts

i have a 1992 gmc 1500 in need of a new engine. i like the gm 383 ht crate engine. i was wondering if anyone knows if this can be installed into my truck keeping the tbi and computer. this engine is designed for a carburator, so is the tbi going to restrict it.if i can't use the stock computer and tbi what is the cheapest route to take.

you need something that has vortech heads. not sure if that does. they have a truck 383 that makes some crazy tq which is what I would look for

gm says that the truck 383 has vortec heads but recomends a holley 750 cfm carb so that sounds like it built for a carb intatke.

you can, but you'll also have to buy teh GM TBI/Vortec intake manifold (~$300,) i would expect a jet adjustable fuel pressure regulator, caprice cop injectors (or larger,) and get a custom tune. that adds up to some $$, but would be cool.

i personally would order the edelbrock mutiport conversion for vortec heads to complete that crate engine. that would provide much needed airflow, economy, and fuel volume, and might even cost less than all of the above add-ons.

From what I have read, the 383 camshaft will not be a great pick for the TBI. The Edelbrock TBI cam is 194/214 duration compared to the 196/206 Ram Jet cam. Reason being is that the MAP sensor is touchy on our TBI's and requires a nice lobe separation of around 112 to function correctly. A custom chip will be needed and Cop Car injectors with a fuel pressure regulator will also be required. If you don't mind the money, another great item would be the Turbo City bigger throttle body. Flows like 100 cfm then the stock TBI. Nice to have for a 383.

Yes it can be done. There is a GM Vortec intake manifold for TBI in the GM performance parts catalog under part number: 1249821

I tuned one of these conversions on a 95 350 TBI truck, we used a 454 throttle body from a 95 454 pick up. I burned a custom chip for this truck application and it ran fine. To use a 95 454 throttle body you have to use a 1995 fuel pump as GM went to a high pressure TBI system in 1994/95. With long tube headers and a dual exhaust sytem the truck ran great. It got decent milage and wasn't any worse off than the old anemic 350 that it replaced. The cam can be used that comes with the HT383, it idled smooth like a stock 350 from GM. The engine definitely needs headers and duals or a large single 3" exhaust system.
