Allison fluid

Recommended Posts

I went to a service center today that services trucks big and small to set ap a tranny flush. For some reson we could not agree on the fluid thoug. As far as I know, allison 1000 requires syntetic fluid. I wanted to put transynd. Oddly, the service manager kept telling me that allison 1000 takes regular fluid. So he shows me in his service computer that they use to look up parts that allison 1000 requires dextron III. I was like wtf? Am I missing something here. And this is a big place Detroit diesel, they service rigs and all kinds of mega machines for decades. Very very confusing. Could they have a bug for years and could they have been putting the wrong fluid in 1000 series all along?

Allison 1000 does spec out Dex III as not only factory fill but replacement fluid. However, Transynd meets Dex III and is a suitable replacement if you want to run synthetic. Go to the Allison website (www.allisontransmission.com) and it will give you everything you ever wanted to know about the 1000 series transmissions. By the way, I use Transynd in my 1000 and it works fine.

Mobil 1 ATF will work just fine and is a good synthetic to use as well as AMSOIL ATF. AMSOIL makes a direct replacement to the Transynd called Torque-Drive. It is intended more for the commercial side of the Allison Transmissions but can be used in the HD's with the allison. 4 gallon of the Torque-Drive runs $90 wholesale.
