285's going to fit????

Recommended Posts

I am heading to the tire shop to hopefully fit some 285-75r-16's on my stock 1500 Sierra 4wd....torsions maxed. I am thinking they won't fit, but can anyone prove me wrong?? I hope so! Otherwise, I'll stick w/ the 265's. I am getting BFG All Terrains K/O's.

285's fit on my stock 1995 Yukon with the factory wheels. The Yukon sits lower than the pickup or Suburban. Aftermarket wheels may rub with those tires.

I can't comment on newer body style if that is what you have.

I ran em on my 00 for about 41K miles (still have them waiting for winter to put em back on). I switched to the BFG mud terrain size 255/85/R16. They are slightly skinnier and taller

Ryan..........So you're saying I can most likely make the 285's fit as is?  I am running stock wheels, and no extra lift other than cranked torsions.  Was your clearnce a bit on the iffy side, or did it seem ok?

I put 285x75x16 duelers on last week,

Ford keys bars up 2" no problems lock to lock.

I think they would have fit ok with just bars cranked and no keys, read some posts hear last week that said they had stock wheels cranked bars few inches with no issues.

The only minor issue is before 285's I had the 265's, after key install and cranking bars I had at least 1 1/2" to 2" spacing between upper control arm and bump stop ride firmer but very good truck was level, 36" from inner fender lip to ground on all 4's. After 285's (told alignment shop not to touch bar adjustment but think they did) now I get some light/faint clunking/rateling when suspension compresses.

When I looked I saw upper control arm to bum stop clearance now almost touching? I think they must have readjusted bars to get alignment? I've discussed this with my local 4x4 shop (they did not do the alignment), they say I can cut off some of bump stop, replace bump stops with shorter ones, or crank up bars a little which will make front taller than back, they say then put 2" ad aleaf in back?

My fear is then back will be higher than front again? which defeats some of the benifits of the keys, plus I just put on new stock length Rancho's don't want to have to buy longer travel ones. well guess there's always a trade off/compramise.

Just some things to ponder if your thinking of doing this.

I cranked my torsions last night. I got 1 3/4" out of it. My measurement to my fender lip was 35 1/4", after it's 37". I had the 285's installed this morning, and they cleared with no problems lock to lock. The ride is a bit firmer, you can definitely tell the difference, yet I like it better. A bit more of a positive feel, and a more balanced feel. I'm a happy camper! Thanks for your input! W/ the 285's, my fender is @ 38 1/8" to the inner fender edge. :D

285's will fit with no modifications whatsoever on full size '94-2005 4x4's

I rechecked today while I was checking my CV assemblies for wear/rubbing- had none.

Height from fender lip to ground is 37" all the way arround.

sorry I miss quoted earlier.

New update,

Looks like my clunking probably was there before keys and tires, but tires were worn and noisy masking the clunking.

Looks like my problem is the steering intermediate shaft, just picked up the lube kit to do now as temporary fix.

Dealer has (back ordered) updated/upgraded shaft on order, says at least (3)week wait.
