Installed Westers, now pings

Recommended Posts

Well, I just installed my Westers PCM today and now I have a horrible engine ping. I have read through lots of posts, and it appears this is a normal "growing pain" for the truck while it learns and adjusts to the new tune.

My question is how long does it take? When should I start to get worried?

Thanks!

not sure what specific tune I received. They asked me questions about my driving styles/needs, and they designed a tune based on my answers. I do a fair amount of city driving, with the occasional trip. I do have a boat, so I wanted more hp/torque to ease the towing process.

I let them know that I run premium gas, and they said that is great and it will help performance.

just installed the PCM today, so probably only 15 miles or so...

Id say take it easy and put some more miles on it. Give the PCM some time to adjust.

yeah...that is what I am gathering from reading other posts. Lyndon just wrote me back and said it takes a little while for the computer to run through the knock "relearn" before it stops audibly pinging. He said that a few WOT runs will help.

I have a lot of driving to do tomorrow, so we will see what happens...

Hmm.. I just installed my Westers too...and didnt have this problem. I have the 6.0L and asked for the 89-93 tune. I didnt think I would get my computer as fast as I did and had 2/3rds of 89 then filled the rest up with 93 - so Im not even at full 93 tune...and didnt have any pinging at all. I even towed my car last night - no radio - listening for any kind of pinging - and heard nothing.

I say stick with it for a few - take a few full throttle blasts with it....but if you hear crazy pinging - get out of it.

It would make it easier for these guys to help - if they knew what kind of engine you have and what tune westers did for you ?

I have a 5.3 in a '01 X-Cab Z71. The tune is for premium fuel - 91-93 octane. I run premium gas anyways, so no change necessary there.

Took it out again tonight, and it seems to have corrected itself. Seems to shift smoother, and with more power. I notice myself going much faster than before, but it doesn't really fell like I am - that extra horsepower seems to sneak up on ya... Everybody else says that the performance will only get better as the truck adjusts to the new tune, so I am looking forward to that!

The real test will be when I pull my boat for the first time. I am hoping the extra torque and HP will allow me to tow in Overdrive more often.

Thanks again for all the help!

well, the ping is back now. Sounds like two gremlins going at it with hammers under the hood. I have read other posts from people who had this same problem, and it corrected itself after a couple of days. Hopefully I will see the same improvement. If not, time to get some money back....

Have you tried cleaning the MAFS? That is a common cause of pinging problems.

Definatly call Lyndon on Monday, he will either send you a new tune tweaked for your truck, or you can send it back for a full refund, your choice. If you try a retune, you can still send it back for a full refund if that one doesn't work for you. It does happen, 2-3% of trucks will have problems with custom tunes, that's why the 30 day test drive.

Hope it works out for you!
