Check Engine & Air Bag Lights Are Lit

Recommended Posts

"We'll leave the Check Engine and Air Bag lights on for ya"…

Just finished replacing the diesel injection pump on my '96 Suburban. Whew! What a job!

But I had some collateral damage. Now the check engine and air bag warning lights are on, steady, all the time. I took it to the dealer for them to set the injection pump timing and they told me they can't get any codes out of the diagnostic portion of the computer, which means it's either dead or disconnected. I think they called it the "BCM". They said they thought it was either a blown computer or a loose wire. I'd believe the loose wire. I crawled around inside the engine compartment a lot replacing the pump and I wouldn't be surprised if I knocked something loose.

My question is: where to look?

And where is this BCM?

Is there a particular part of the harness I need to examine?

They didn't really seem like they wanted to troubleshoot it, and a new computer is $200-range. I'd like to avoid that.

By the way, I did disconnect the batteries like I was supposed to, so I'd be surprised if the computer really is blown.

Update:

The "Service Engine Soon" light has now gone out after about 600 miles of driving.

And the "Air Bag" light has actually linked off a few times and stayed off for short periods of time. So I'm guessing it's a loose connection. Still looking for tips on where to look. My eyes cross when I look at the wiring harness under the hood.
