1969 CST w/396 (402?)

Recommended Posts

I found a 1969 CST with an owner stated 402 (400 transmission). Chevrolet went from the 396 to the 402 late in 1969 (right?). Some information I found on the web state that the 1970 CSTs were offered with a 400 V8 (402 ci). I suppose they mean the big block 402 and not a small block 400. Can anyone shed some light on this?

As well, what do you think a restorable '69 CST 396 would sell for? It's a driver. This one needs some body work, particularly rockers, a bit of bed work and floor boards. Apparently the engine and transmission is strong. The guy is asking 3 grand, but I would try to get him below $2k.

Yes, that is true. What's wierd about it is that Chevy had so much invested into the name "396" that all 402's were marketed as "396" to avoid falling sales.

As for the 400/402 confusion, in 1970 the El Camino SS could be purchased with the 402. The 402 engine that was still known as a 396 was renamed the "Turbo Jet 400" and offered only 300hp, down from 350hp. I'm not sure if that's the same engine info that you've found, but that's what I know. The 402 was a BBC, and if I'm not mistaken, so was the 400 in latter years. 350 c.i.d. and below is the SBC

If he's asking $3k for it, I'd try to get him to take $1800 if the d.t. is as strong as he says it is. Good luck with it.
