billet grills

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone has overheating problems with billet grills? My buddy called me from salt lake today, telling me not to buy the Precision grille that he has. He said his engine went to 260 degrees, and the allison to 300 degrees, redline on both. He pulled the grille and kept truckin on to Sturgis no problem. He rolling a 2004 duramax , and im rolling a 2004 8.1/allison. Wanted a grille but not anymore. Anyone else have this problem?

I have a Putco grille insert on my truck and I've had no problems. I haven't even seen the guage budge in 90+ degree days towing my enclosed trailer full of tools.

I saw two different trucks this summer so far running the winter cover on their Dmax's just to keep bugs out.

Your friend is either towing something way too big or he has problems on the horizon. Could be just pulling your leg also.

I've wondered the same thing. I have a Precision grill on my Suburban and forget what kind is on the Silverado. That one blocks more of the grill area so I've been thinking about putting a precision on it also. One of the induction manufacturers that I spoke with said that they measured the speed of the air passing through an aftermarket grill. They saw 30 MPH with the stock grill and 27 MPH after it passed through the aftermarket grill.

I was National Sales Manager for Trenz for a while and I never, repeat never, had an issue with a billet grill causing overheating. I'm going to take a stab in the dark though. I'll bet he caught a plastic bag or something while driving, covering the grill. When he slowed down to stop because of the overheating the bag flew off. Believe me, when some of our wild designers came up with some off beat grill designs I wondered about overheating, but it never happened. If you look at the Denali OE grill, it is small circles. I doubt this was a grill problem.

mxrider4 is talking about my truck I just got back from sturgis last night,no plastic bag on the grill. When I took the billet grill off it reduced my tranny temp and moter temp I would have not made it to sturgis with out doing so.I dont doubt that something is wrong with my truck but no check engine light the fan was on all the way there and all the way back this was my first trip pulling a trailer and very unhappy with this new truck I only have 6000 mile on the truck.and I could not get no better than 200 miles on a 26 gallon tank 7-8 miles per gallon I am pulling a 26 foot weekend warrior with two harleys

YES it does cause the motor to run hotter no one in hte world will convince me that putting an overlay of any kind over the main airsource to the radiator will not cause over heating. grills are for looks not performance. Anyways i had the rip off the denali billet grill on my yukon and the d**n clutch fan kept coming on going 60 miles per hour in 100 degree heat up a grade, popped the grill off (no plastic bags) and what do you know... no power robbing clutch fan going up grades... by the ways the grill i had probably had to cut off about half of hte airflow at least. i dont like the look of the stock grill but im gonna check into the billet bar kind with fewer bars to still get that look and good airflow plus it protects from rather large bugs getting bbqed into the radiator fins, but thats just my take on the whole issue, :banghead:
