4L60E Trans Troubles

Recommended Posts

Hi guys...I am new around here. My primarily reasoning for being here today is I lost reverse on my 02 Silverado (4X4 5.3 auto) yesterday. The tranny "clunked" once before going down the highway, and nothing was affected. Yesterday, I was coming home and the trans "clunked" or popped and I have no reverse now. This truck has been cared for and never abused. The truck has 55k miles.

Used to be that when reverse went out so would 2nd gear, but with these electronic trannies, they must have changed something. Second gear went out on mine about a month ago. Had to get it rebuilt. Did a SES light come on? Mine did, hooked it up and it pretty much told you what happened. If it's still under warranty, take it in ASAP, maybe you can prevent any other damage. Usually dealers will want to replace the whole tranny, could be an expensive fix if not still under warranty. Chris

This truck has never had any type of warning light come on. The vehicle is out of warranty, but my dealer is gonna do what he can for me since I have bought 6 new trucks from him in as many years. What really ticks me off is the 55K miles are mostly highway miles. The truck has never hauled anything or been in any kind of a bind and is not ran hard at all. Pretty weak design in my opinion. Thanks for your reply.

No arguments from me, the 4L60E is a joke for a tranny. Why the 4L80E isn't put in these trucks is a question I'll never get an answer to. I probably will never buy another GM vehicle with a 4L60E in it. Probably get a 6 speed in my Duramax in a couple years, although the Allison is the best auto in a heavy duty truck on the market. Hope your dealer works with you on this one. Chris
