Comparison-Duramax vs PStroke vs Cummins

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, i just wanted to state about how other sites are comparing Fords new Superduty to ours the Chevy Duramax and the Dodge Cummins, alot of hype and speculation are hovering over Ford, if you guys dont know or dont care theres a site called fordtrucks.com, sometimes i stop in just to see how things are going but people tend to get upsit when other people mention other brands beating theres and thats were the new superduty come's into place, people claim and witnessed Ford beating a pulloff test between Chevy and Dodge which i find hard to believe, the Duramax has 590ft lbs of torque and so does Dodge with 600ft lbs and people say torque is where it comes handy when hauling heavy loads and horsepower just keeps it upfloat, but im gonna come off my good side and say this, Ford shouldve got spanked by the Duramax and the Cummins, and Ford says the torqshift is what really delivered, while look at the Allison its just as better and plus one guy at the site (fordtrucks) claimed that it was an even match cause all three brands were 05 Models while according to this site and all GM Sites the 05 Silverado HD is supposed to come out bigger and bolder and more Horsepower and Torque and Dodge hasnt even been released yet either if im correct, so to me if was a cheat cause Ford had there 05 compared to the 04's of Chevy and Dodge to me Ford can never have a real speculation. Hows your guys thoughts on this power struggle and favortism towards Ford.

chevy fanboys will say the duramax is better

ford fanboys will say the powerstroke is better

dodge fanboys will say the cummings is better...

i see a trend here

to each his own..

the numbers (HP and torque) go up every year one maker tries to beat the other.. and so on and so forth..

my only goddamn problem is no one has duramaxes...

yet powerstrokes and cummings are both readily available..

and im a chevy fanboy too.

Hi -

To each his own with these types of closed tests. I read these results last week and my first thought was that they finished so close together that I could live with any of these diesel engines in my garage. None of them really stood out enough to sway my vote or preference. We'll just have to wait and really see how the Ford 6.0 does after it's been on the road for more than two years. As of now, it hasn't been all that pretty but it appears to be getting better and better.

Here's the test results...

After this test we drag raced Dodge, GMC and Ford trucks with 13,400 lb loads on a 1/4 mile strip, each with identical gear ratios. The races were conducted with the air conditioner on, in 4x4 mode (so we would not get wheel spin) and we were asked not to spool up the turbo by braking and throttling at the same time. By conducting the races this way we could insure that the conditions would more closely mimic real world towing acceleration.

With the diesels, the Dodge/Cummins pulled off the line the quickest , the GMC Duramax next and the Ford Power Stroke last. The Dodge's narrow power band quickly revealed itself and both the Ford and GMC pulled ahead before 30 mph was reached. The Ford and GMC stayed nearly even until about 30 mph and then the Ford started pulling ahead, winning by a full truck/trailer length by the time it hit 60 mph... and then the Ford exploded killing six onlookers from Ford Motor Co. J/K

IMHO: I would not be surprised or bothered if a PSD pulled ahead of a DMAX. The key for GM is to build a reputation of a reliable engine and not be too caught up in the numbers game, assuming they are not too far behind. So far it would appear as if Ford has lost ground in switching from the 7.3 to the 6.0, probably for the benefit of GM. Sure, the DMAX is not without problems. But go to Ford boards and you'll find more talk about problems than on a DMAX board right now.

THATS EXACTLY RIGHT!!!

The worst ones are the half ton races, everyone's competing for the most power, but we don't need power, WE NEED RELIABILITY!!!!! I mean of course we need power, but reliable power!

GM had a horrible experience w/ the 6.5 turbo diesel, Ford's 7.3 was bulletproof, the Cummins is just an awesome engine. As long as GM has decent horsepower and torque ratings, I'd just stick w/ reliability

That is a lot of horsepower to pull out of a new 6 liter diesel and they are running a lot of boost to do it to. The 7.3 was noisey for sure but a lot more reliable even if it lacked a bit in the numbers game.

No bashing for me, i love my truck (chevy) had it since 2002 and never really had any problems with it even with towing a rig or trailer, so far its been dependable for whatever needs i have. All three are good trucks but i rather stick my bowtie.

I'd quit worrying about the differences between the 3 diesel engines and pay more attention to the differences in the actual truacks. The performance of the engines is so close I can't imagine it would be a reason to pick one over the other. What good is a few extra hp/lb-ft if you get the truck home and find out you don't like the way it handles or is missing an option that's available on another make?

Dodges have a bad rap for transmissions but are probably the cheapest if the three. Ford's still have the highest frame/body clearance, solid front axles and manual hubs for 4x4s if you prefer them. GMs probably have the smoothest ride, best handling, Allison trannies and the lowest body height.

I be alot more concerned about stuff like that instead of the engine. Just my 2c worth.

And the Dodge blew it's tranny!

I have a friend who is a mechanic at one of the largest Ford dealers. He let me know that he would never get a powerstroke due to all the problems he sees. He said they have problems with internal parts and even the blocks. The parts are not made to take the high pressure of the turbo. Rumour has it that Ford is sourcing their new engines from another manufacturer, the current one being International. This is not to say that all powerstroke engines will blow up, just be careful.

Regarding the race, I just read a post about a race between an M3 and a Cadillac CTS-V. The M3 lost be a large margin (even though all mags have the M3 being faster). Each time these races are set up, the purpose is to show that the sponsor has a better vehicle than their competitors so it's staged to make the sponsor win. It means nothing unless you own the vehicle that's being promoted by the sponsor.

In other words, it's propaganda.

  • 2 weeks later...

I attended The Diesel Page Pull Off. This year They pulled a trailer weighing 11,920 lbs from dead stop from 5 mile mark to 6 mile marker. Speed and time through the mile oh yeah over half the mile is a 6% grade. Winner non modified Duramax, then Ford 6.0 PS, with Dodge pulling up the rear. Modified trucks......Duramax, #2 Ford PS 6.0, 3rd Dodge.

It be true as I was either riding or driving the chase truck! :jester:

I dont know if you guys seen that Commercial of GMC Sierras trucks pulling some heavy loads but i didnt get a good close up but at the end of the commercial they said something about increase of HP and Torque and rite at the end they had a 3500 dually hauling a heavy butt load trailer, maybe theres an increase of horsepower and torque in the Duramax but i only saw it once so i wouldnt know yet.

That test generated a lot of posts on the ford forums I read, FTE and dieselstop. Even the ford guys had trouble buying some of the results. It seems Ford may have used the old LB7 and HO motors in the competition. They sure as heck weren't testing 05's as GM and Dodge are not about to release early versions to them. Since it was a Ford show, I sure wouldn't put it past them to lean on the scales a bit.

In any case, I agree with those above that all the motors are good choices. I actually preferred my 01 dmax over my 03 6.0PSD for fun to drive, mileage and (by FAR) reliability.

Did you guys read the Torque of the new 05 Duramaxs, they have "610 ft lbs of torque" wow, with torque increase im betting the horsepower of the duramax will too, but very impressive it will differently smoke the pstroke and the cummins!

I cant wait to order mine soon when they start showing up at dealers.
