Are Dual Shock Hoops really Necessary?

Recommended Posts

Here are a couple of quick questions for you guys...

Please help me I am lost on this.

I have recently purchased a 2004 Extended Cab Regular Box 4X4 2500 HD Duramax Diesel truck.

I am going to have a Pro Comp 6 Inch Lift kit installed Via a GMC dealership.

I am planning to put on a set of 35 Inch AT BF Good Ridge Tires.

LT315/70R17/D

LT315/75R16/D

Which size would give the best traction and looks?

They are going on a set of Weld wheels just don’t know what kind yet.

I was thinking about going with a dual shock hoops in the front and a single shock in the rear. I am going to install Fox Shox Remote Reservoir abosberers.

So do I need dual shocks or not? Do they make that big of a difference in handling/comfort and performance?

Does anyone have any experience about going with duals verse a single shock?

Also...

Do I need to install rear traction bars for the rear wheels?

Thanks again to anyone who posts good or bad everyone’s opinion counts to me.

#1 dont have the dealer install the d**n lift, have a offrad shop do it.

#2 dual shock hoops help the ride, i have them on my ride, chceck sig for pics.

#3 BFG's AT's are good tires, do you plan on doing any offroad use?

#4 Trac bars would help if you installed a banks six gun or edge juice on that diesel, if kept stock, its not needed.

#5 35's eh? you may be looking at a different set of gears, 4.56 maybe

#6 fox shox eh? you must have some serious dough, if you go the dual shock hoops, you'll need 8 shocks, and the foxes are 200 a piece for the good ones. you do the math. the bilstein 5150's are a nice shock too..

if you have any more questions feel free to shoot me a line :D

I have a lift and tires, I didn't go with duals in the from because $$$ prevented it at the time...my truck rides better than stock with singles up front, but then again I have never driven it with duals.....it is something I would like to do at some point, but to me it's not a top priority. Traction bars are something I want too....when I'm out at the beach, even with my tires deflated I get a good amount of wheel hop in the rear, so I could see where those would help....but they're not necessary.

I agree with demonseed....find a reputable 4wd shop to install your lift....it'll probably be cheaper and better done than the stealer.

Thanks for the input.

I think I'll go with 6 shocks two up front because of the weight and singles in the rear.

I am going to price out some Track bars now. Anyone know of any brands that work well with 04 diesel 2500HD?

I would love to install banks six gun or edge juice on my diesel, but they don't work with the new 04 GM 6.6L "LLY" Engine a leat not yet. Thanks anyway juicy.

I have heard good things about bilstein 5150's but they don't make the size I need last I checked.

Do I really need a different set of gears? There is 310 stock horse that should turn 35's with ease.

I want to put some aftermarket exhaust on but I can't find anyone one that has installed new pipes on an 04 and had it on a dyno to see if it was worth it.

One guy I know tested his 03 with aftermarket pipes and had no horse power gain at all. (He did not have A CAT Back replacement system and stock air cleaner. So no big surprise but you should still see some gains I think...)

 Offraod unlimited makes awesome trac bars.. http://www.offroadunlimited.com

my buddy has them on this PS diesel look and work awesome.

banks does have the tuner.

get the six gun bundle... my buddy has it on his PS and WOW is all i can say.

i got the 5150's with 11inches of travel in the rear. got them from offoard unlimited too..

give them a call

ask for glenn or chris.. they'll hook you up with what you need., im a frequent customer :dupe:

i know the hp is enough, its the ratio of the gears combined with the larger tires. you might get away with it, you'll know, if your tranny keeps up and downshifting looking for the right gear, then you know you'll need different gears. :bs:

hope this helps :D

Hey thanks juicy..

I took a look at you ride and wow nice!

I noticed the trees and plants in the background that you must live some where close to the west coast and very close to the ocean.

I was wondering what size of tires are those and are you running mostly in sand?

I sort of live part time in Edmonton and part time in whistler BC, Up here it is Rock Snow, Mud and hills climbs that stop most trucks dead in there tracks so guys with trucks like ours try and get as far up the mountain as we can without busting everything to pieces, Then we unload the dirt bikes/skidoos/quads whatever we are hauling, This method saves us gas and have to refuel our toys Five times just to get up the mountain.

I noticed a trailer hitch on your ride do you do much towing?

Do you find your trany switching around like a dirty whoar when you’re climbing up logging roads?

Your profile does not say what year you truck is, so I don’t know if you have a GM towing option included.

I have a button that I push on my shifter that sends my Allison trany into tow/haul mode that holds her in each gear longer to prevent it from jumping around.

Has anyone out there used this feature with oversized tires?

Has anyone got anything to say good or bad about the new DMax/Allison with a lift kit and big tires?

35inch parnelli jones dirt grip tires, taken them in sand, mud, gravel and water, no problems at all  i do a lot of sand, take it up to pismo beach, i thought at first, crap the aggressive thread is gonna get me in trouble, i dropped the psi just like everyone else, and i took that truck whompin all day no problems

its a 1999 silverado z71..

tow a boat every so often, up the hills, i use the tow haul mode, no problem there, but i dont have stock gears, i have 4.56 gears to make up for the bigger tires  so i dont have that jumping around.

as a matter of fact ive gotten into the habit of driving in T/H mode all the time, i noticed a little bit better mpg with it, dont ask me how but it does :chevy:

any more question, drop em here :flag:

ill be happy to help :P

would those traction bars help there? I thought it was just from way too much spring. It does drive me nuts....

p.s. I dont get it under acceleration just crusin. Its as if there are pogo sticks back there instead of shocks

wheel hop... sounds like you need add-a-leaf and some better shocks back there... trac bars are for traction during acceleration, the axle has a tendancy to want to twist with all the ponies you are giving it, a trac bar limits this, keeping your tires on the pavement where you need it most. i put some 5150s on the rear of my truck, made the ride better all around. look into that first, what kind of shocks do you have in the rear?
