24" Wheels on a 2500HD

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

We bought our 03 DMAX Silverado with 1 thing in mind for our buisness, ADVERTISMENT. It was bought white so we could do an entire body wrap of the vehicle, and a Raider Nomad 2 canopy was baught to make the whole thing come together. ANYWAY> we have the the decals and the canopy and now for some real shine and bling and well....standouttieness haha... we need the 24" Lexani's....PROBLEM.. We baught a 7K$ warranty for up to 180K Kms. So we went to the delearship to have a chat about how they would like these 24"s and THEY DONT. They said the comp couldnt be set for those ESPECIALLY since its a DMAX. AND that it would void our warrenty. ANY EXPIRIENCES WITH THIS?? thanks.

If you regear truck to where over all gear ratio is about the same as stock when you add larger tires, they will not be able to harp much about it but if you do not and have tranny or engine problems, they will blame it on big tires and stock gears and rightfully so if there is a big change here. Most people do not consider the added driveline strain that bigger tires can add. if you go up about 20% in tires size (about a 36's to 38's) regear to a 4.56 and you will have about same overall ratio as stock. 4.10's would do it for 33's or 34's

Yes I understand that, But i wont be running rubber that is much larger simply a lot larger wheels(rims) 24" Lexani Krystal's and I just wanted to know if THE rims would have ne real effect.

A very easy solution would be to keep the stock tires and rims. If you have a problem then just put the stock ones on and take it to the dealer. Its true most Dealers will not even look at the truck until it has the stock tires and rims on it. It an issue with the Allison Tranny not the Dmax. Since Allison won't share it computer parameters know one can change it for different tire sizes. Good luck. Try talking to different Dealers some don't make a big issue out of it.

It is pretty mach a tranny issue in any truck as it takes a bigger strain with oversized tires. I know one guy that works at a Post Office never here and he had a tranny go out in a truck with 36's on it a few years ago. They would not fix it under warranty but they did tell him that had he regeared the truck properly they would have covered it. He was a bit hot none the less. Keeping old rims would not be practical if it crapped out on the road and had to be towed in for service related to drive train.

It is the over all diameter that will make or brake you and 24' wheel will give the lok of having bigger tires than stock. I am guess that they will be at least 33 or 34'" with tires on them which is at least 10% bigger than stock.

One thing to add here...if you're planning to put 24s on there, I'm guessing you're thinking about low profile street tires. You'll also want to lower it a bit, cause trust me, it looks silly if you don't. At any rate, I dropped mine 3" in the front and 5" in the back, and had to do some fairly major surgery to the front wheel wells to keep them from rubbing the tire.

Just a little something to think about. All manageable, just don't be surprised when you have to cut out large portions of the wheel wells to make it happen.
